in the eventvwr I see the following message: An error was detected on device \Device\Harddisk0 during a paging operation. There are no disk failure lights on the server so what is causing these errors in the Event Viewer? Thanks Paul Tuesday, December 01, 2009 1:28 PM Reply | Quote Answers 1 Sign an error was detected on device harddisk1 during a paging operation in to vote Hi Paul,The error message you are viewing has occured due to paging . This event might have generated during swapping operation ( memory manager either swapped a page out of memory to your external disk or retrieved a page from your external disk ) So the article which joachim had posted 244780 is helpful and you need to analyze the CDB frame to understand if the issue had occured due to write operation or read. Another series of disk checks from the CD didn't come up with anything. After rebooting to Windows, the disk was just fine.Any idea what might be causing something like this?

How do I track down what is causing the problem? The problem device is an external WD My Book 1 TB IEEE 1394 SBP2. I don't understand why there should be a paging operation on this device as it is used only as an external backup for the C: drive. It has been set up with no paging file. NEW Info: I setup WD My Book drive to have a virtual paging file and guess what - The error messages stopped! Go figure!
