Windows 8.1 Update Windows 8 & 8.1 Tutorial MAPI Error Messages When You Import or Export Messages in Outlook Express Affected Products: SoftwareAffected Operating Systems: Windows® XPISSUE: If you try to import messages into Microsoft Outlook Express, you may receive the following error message: Messages cannot be imported from the MAPI client. An error has occurred. If you try to export messages from Outlook Express, you may receive the following error message: The export could not be performed. An error occurred while initializing MAPI. Additional information about this issue can be found in Microsoft Knowledge Base article 179637. RESOLUTION: Manually copy the e-mail messages from the old computer to the new one rather than using import/export. Method 1 Manually copy the e-mail messages from the old computer as *.eml files, and then copy them onto the new computer's Outlook Express. On the old computer, create a folder on the desktop to save the e-mail in. On the old computer, open Outlook Express. In Outlook Express, click to select the desired e-mail messages. Drag the highlighted e-mails from Outlook Express into the folder that was created. Copy the *.eml files to a floppy disk or another method to transfer the files from the old computer to the new one. On the new computer, open the folder containing the *.eml files that were copied from the old computer to the floppy disk or other method. On the new computer, open Outlook Express. In the folder containing the *.eml files, click to select the desired e-mail messages. Drag the highlighted e-mails from the folder into the Outlook Express inbox. Method 2 Copy the *.dbx files from the old computer to the new computer, and then overwrite the *.dbx files on new computer. Find where the *.dbx files are saved on the old computer. On the old computer, open Outlook Express. From the Tools menu, click Options. In the Options dialog box, click the Maintenance tab, and then click Store Folder. In the Store Location dialog box, click to select the entire folder path listed, and then copy it by pressing the CTRL+C keys. Close Outlook Express on the old computer. Copy the *.dbx files from the old computer. From the Start menu, click Run. In the Run dialog box, paste the copied path by pressing the CTRL+V keys. Click OK. In the Outlook Express window, click to select the desired *.dbx files, and then from the Edit menu, click Copy. Close all open windows. Paste the copied files to a floppy disk or some other method to transfer the files from the old computer to the new one. Find where the *.dbx files are saved on the new computer
