We have a road map to move these applications to a new server, but have to support the existing one for the time being. I am running into an issue opening up .docx files on this server. I have Office 2003 installed (server is a Windows 2000 SP4 machine w/ ~1GB of RAM). I have downloaded the Office compatibility pack from Microsoft and did the regsvr32 %SystemRoot%\system32\ole32.dll command when I received the error message There was an error opening the file. This did http://superuser.com/questions/581008/opening-office-2010-docx-file-in-office-2003-on-win2k-machine-with-compatibil not fix the issue and so I'm stuck with getting the There was an error opening the file message anytime I try to open the .docx file. The file has 2 pictures in it and I believe it was created in Office 2010, if either of those facts are helpful. We don't always have control over all aspects of the documentation and conversion isn't an option at this time. –mlw4428 Apr 10 '13 at 17:47 Part of the problem is that your using the Compatibility Pack designed to work with Office 2007 .docx files not Office 2010 .docx files. –Ramhound Apr 10 '13 at 18:44 @Ramhound: Why would that be a problem? Word 2007 can open 2010's docx files just fine, with very minor compatibility issues. I don't see a huge change in schemas between the 2007 and 2010 XML formats. –Karan Apr 10 '13 at 19:45 @Karan - I just know that Office 2013 change the schema enough that Office 2010 can't open Office 2013 .docx I never had the chance to use the compatability pack with Office 2003 when Office 2007. I was just pointing out it could be a problem. Whats more likely is either a problem with the

AFAIK there are no issues with the 32-bit version of Windows 7. __________________ Cheers, Paul Edstein [MS MVP - Word] #7 04-04-2011, 12:04 AM cookiegal Windows XP Office 2007 Novice Join Date: Mar 2011 Posts: 5 Quote: Originally Posted by macropod Hi cookiegal, It may be a compatability issue between Word 2003 and the 64-bit version of Windows 7. Use these instructions if you want to open docx files but do NOT have Word 2007, 2010, or 2013 installed. For general background information about opening docx files including troubleshooting tips, see How to Open docx files. Opening docx files without Word 2007, 2010, or 2013 Click the statement that best describes your software set up. The link takes you to a short tutorial: I have Word 2007/2010/2013 installed (link opens new page) I have a previous version of Word installed I do not have Word installed Opening docx files with a previous version of Word If you own a previous version of Word (2000, 2002, or 2003), you can open documents with the .docx file extension. But to do it, you need to install the Microsoft Office 2007 Compatibility Pack. After downloading the pack, not only can you open and edit Word 2007/2010/2013 docx files, but also Excel (.xlsx) and PowerPoint (.pptx) files. YOU WILL NOT be able to edit all features in a docx file using a previous version of Word. The Compatibility Pack is essentially a workaround. If you need to edit and save everything in a docx file, you have to buy Microsoft Word. If your version of Word is older than 2000, you will not be able to open and edit Word 2007/2010/2013 documents using the Compatibility Pack. But you can install the Word viewer and open and print documents. See the section, Open a docx file without Word. The download link takes you to the Microsoft website where you can install the Compatibility Pack. Follow the directions carefully! Do not skip the steps for installing High-Priority updates. Skipping the updates may result in error messages and the inability to open docx files. If you already installed the Compatibility Pack without downloading the updates, uninstall it
