An Error Occurred While Installing Json (1.8.3), And Bundler Cannot Continue.
a minute: Sign up An error occurred while installing rake (10.1.0), and Bundler cannot continue up vote 6 down vote favorite 2 Today I've reinstalled my Mac and I had to reinstall rails etc too. Now I've set up everything correctly ( at least I hoped ), but I keep running into a very annoying error. $ bundle install Fetching gem ruby rake metadata from https://rubygems.org/.......... Fetching gem metadata from https://rubygems.org/.. Resolving dependencies... ArgumentError: invalid byte sequence in UTF-8 An error occurred while installing rake (10.1.0), and Bundler cannot continue. Make sure that `gem install rake -v '10.1.0'` succeeds before bundling. Now I thought reinstalling "rake" would solve the problem, but it didn't. I've followed this blog post, but it didn't solve my problem neither, because there're no files in the "/etc/paths.d" folder. $ ls -a /etc/paths.d . .. So I've tried to change my .bashrc file as suggested in an other blog post. But this didn't work out neither. # .bashrc file PATH=$PATH:$HOME/.rvm/bin # Add RVM to PATH for scripting # Make sure the UTF-8 locale is set correctly export LANG="en_US.UTF-8" export LC_ALL="en_US.UTF-8" I also tried to delete and reinstall rails, but this didn't solve the problem neither. So do you guys have any suggestions where to look? Update I was able to "solve" this problem by removing RVM and Rails and using RBenv instead. I know this is not a solution to the problem, but now it does work. ruby-on-rails utf-8 locale share|improv

I'm working on a gem that I generated using bundle init. It has two development dependencies (bundler and rake, added by bundle init) and one regular dependency, thor, which I added. When it's time to test it out, I run rake install to an error occurred install it into my system gems, and get this: $ rake install foobar 0.1.0 built to pkg/foobar-0.1.0.gem. rake aborted! Couldn't install gem, run `gem install /Users/brandon/Code/foobar/pkg/foobar-0.1.0.gem' for more detailed output Tasks: TOP => install (See full trace by running task with --trace) So I run gem install /Users/brandon/Code/foobar/pkg/foobar-0.1.0.gem and get: $ gem install /Users/brandon/Code/foobar/pkg/foobar-0.1.0.gem Fetching: thor-0.19.1.gem (100%) Successfully installed thor-0.19.1 Successfully installed foobar-0.1.0 2 gems installed I would have expected it to fail and see the reason why, but instead it installs. I uninstall both foobar and thor and try to figure out why. I run rake install --trace and see that it’s failing on line 69 of gem_helper. It appears that the gem is being installed with the --local flag. If I run gem install /Users/brandon/Code/foobar/pkg/foobar-0.1.0.gem --local I get: $ gem install /Users/brandon/Code/foobar/pkg/foobar-0.1.0.gem --local ERROR: Could not find a valid gem 'thor' (~> 0.19.1) in any repository OK, that probably makes sense because I install dependencies with bundle instal
