Segmentation faults occur when accessing memory which does not belong to your process, they are very common and are typically the result of: using a pointer to something that was deallocated. using an uninitialized hence bogus pointer. using a null pointer. overflowing a buffer. PS: To be more precise this is not manipulating the pointer itself that will cause issues, it's accessing the memory it points to (dereferencing). share|improve this answer edited Oct 17 '08 at 15:18 answered Oct 17 '08 at 15:12 bltxd 5,71322336 52 They aren't rare; I'm just at Exercise 9 from How to Learn C the Hard Way and already encountered one... –11684 Mar 26 '13 at 20:12 5 Another cause of bus errors (on Linux anyway) is when the operating system can't back a virtual page with physical memory (e.g. low-memory conditions or out of huge pages when using huge page memory.) Typically mmap (and malloc) just reserve the virtual address space, and the kernel assigns the physical memory on demand (so called soft page faults.) Make a large enough malloc, and then write to enough of it and you'll get a bus error. –Eloff Jul 14 '15 at 0:09 add a comment| up vote 55 down vote A segfault is accessing memory that

*** Break *** bus error Quote Unread postby paco_uk » Tue Feb 04, 2014 16:45 Hi, I have a problem which is difficult to reproduce. http://stackoverflow.com/questions/212466/what-is-a-bus-error It occurs on about 30% of jobs I submit to the lxplus batch system via bsub but I've only seen it once or twice when running locally. I've tried running my program over a small number of events many times but I still haven't seen the problem. I guess it's https://root.cern.ch/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?t=17602 something to do with the shell environment or maybe my linking is wrong but I don't know where to start looking. Typically the program crashes on startup, although occasionally it crashes at the start of my event loop. Here is the error message I receive. Is it possible to tell what the problem is being caused by?Code: Select all*** Break *** bus error

Prerequisites Requirements Cisco recommends that you read Troubleshooting Router Crashes before proceeding with this document. Components Used The information in this document is based on these software and hardware versions: All Cisco IOSĀ® software versions All Cisco routers Note:This document does not apply to Cisco Catalyst switches or MGX platforms. The information in this document was created from the devices in a specific lab environment. All of the devices used in this document started with a cleared (default) configuration. If your network is live, make sure that you understand the potential impact of any command. Conventions Refer to the Cisco Technical Tips Conventions for more information on document conventions. Identifying Bus Error Crashes The system encounters a bus error when the processor tries to access a memory location that either does not exist (a software error) or does not respond properly (a hardware problem). A bus error can be identified from the output of the show version command provided by the router if not power-cycled or manually reloaded. If you have the output of a show version or show technical-support command (from enable mode)
