Bus Error Linux Command
up “Bus error” system error [closed] up vote 6 down vote favorite 2 I am running a linux tool which uses some system libraries as we as some custom libraries. The purpose of the tool is to access/configure a PCI-express cards that has some firmware running on it. I made some slight change to code, nothing significant and suddenly got a "Bus error". rpmdb open failed I know that is is caused by unaligned memory access, but in the above context is it more likely to be in the firmware memory, i.e a firmware read across the PCI-express bus. I certainly don't believe that my small software change could have caused the "Bus error". Another surprising fact is that a different version of software is working well with this firmware. Can anyone throw some light on the issue. linux debugging bus share|improve this question edited May 3 '11 at 13:44 skaffman 278k63619656 asked May 3 '11 at 13:40 liv2hak 3,8741759109 closed as off-topic by Ciro Santilli 烏坎事件2016六四事件 法轮功, Yu Hao, Chris Loonam, John Pirie, Rob Aug 7 '15 at 16:35 This question appears to be off-topic. From GUII try to start an application (it might be that this only concerns gtk applications such as evince & gthumb but http://www.newit.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,1987.0.html I don't know). The application does not start, instead I am told by my GUI (e17) 'XXXX (the application) stopped running unexpectedly. There was no error message. This error log will be bus error saved as /home/...'. This error message matches the various joke error messages concocted by Microsoft in unhelpfulness. The log is not saved. From TerminalI try to start it from the terminal. The terminal tells me 'Bus error (core dumped)'. Nothing more. I could not find any coredump - though the journalctl log does at least know about this: "May 09 02:03:07 xxxxxx systemd-coredump[9439]: Process linux vi bus 9436 (XXXX) dumped core." Running the application with strace is also not very helpful, though it hints that it all has to do with dconf: "open("/etc/dconf/profile/user", O_RDONLY) = -1 ENOENT (No such file or directory) (...) open("/home/xxxxx/.config/dconf/user", O_RDONLY) = 11"Google searches etc.Not helpful. But then again: who is going to talk about google any more in just a couple of years.Solutionremove /home/

Sorry, if I've missed an existing thread, however - I installed vim and a few other bits and bobs and rebooted. I was then surprised to seeroot@ubuntu:~# vim /var/log/messages Bus errorroot@ubuntu:/etc/asterisk# vim cdr_mysql.conf Bus errorcoupled with the appearance ofApr 21 22:38:50 ubuntu kernel: attempt to access beyond end of deviceApr 21 22:38:50 ubuntu kernel: sda2: rw=0, want=3650856, limit=3634038Apr 21 22:38:50 ubuntu kernel: attempt to access beyond end of deviceApr 21 22:38:50 ubuntu kernel: sda2: rw=0, want=3650856, limit=3634038A reboot with /forcefsck created had no effect. Is this just a bad package in the repo or should I be more concerned? When I removed vim and went back to standard vi everything was fine again.Advice welcome Cheers,Craig Logged craigmcfly Newbie Posts: 11 Re: "Bus error" from vim on Dreamplug « Reply #1 on: 21 April 2011, 11:20:07 pm » Okay, so after a bit more digging, ldconfig is throwing the same error which makes me nervous. Every time I get it, I seeApr 21 23:19:32 ubuntu kernel: attempt to access beyond end of deviceApr 21 23:19:32 ubuntu kernel: sda2: rw=0, want=3635352, limit=3634038appear in the logs. I think you've come to the same conclusion.Does /forcefsck produce a log? Could you remove the microSD card and fsck it in another device? I also wonder if reseating the card might help. If fsck runs and doesn't make any fixes or produce any output, and the problem is intermittent, I'd be inclined to check the seating and cables. Of course I'd expect to see many more errors in such a case, also.
