typically: using a processor instruction with an address that does not satisfy its alignment requirements. Segmentation faults occur when accessing memory which does not belong to your process, they are very common and are typically the result of: using a pointer to something that was deallocated. using an uninitialized hence bogus pointer. using a null pointer. overflowing a buffer. PS: To be more precise this is not manipulating the pointer itself that will cause issues, it's accessing the memory it points to (dereferencing). share|improve this answer edited Oct 17 '08 at 15:18 answered Oct 17 '08 at 15:12 bltxd 5,75322336 52 They aren't rare; I'm just at Exercise 9 from How to Learn C the Hard Way and already encountered one... –11684 Mar 26 '13 at 20:12 6 Another cause of bus errors (on Linux anyway) is when the operating system can't back a virtual page with physical memory (e.g. low-memory conditions or out of huge pages when using huge page memory.) Typically mmap (and malloc) just reserve the virtual address space, and the kernel assigns the physical memory on demand (so called soft page faults.) Make a large enough malloc, and then write to enough of it and you'll get a bus error. –Eloff Jul

The source could be compiled and run on a Linux machine and Windows machine without problems. Compling and Linking was sucessfull on the Mac. I copied the qt libs into the directory of http://www.qtforum.org/article/17594/mac-bus-error.html the binary of my program. When I start the program the widgets are shown for a second then a "Bus Error" occurs. No further description and the program hangs. Does anyone of you had similar problems / an idea what could cause this error? I am very new to the Mac OS. Regards, K.B. The code is working on Unix and Windows systems like a charm http://community.avid.com/forums/t/91636.aspx and is based on QT 4.8.2, VTK 5.8.0.I'm mainly using the QVTKWidget class.I have been able to successfully build QT and VTK for Mac OSX. Simples examples such as bus error displaying a sphere in a VTK scene works.Unfortunately for my specific application, I'm getting a "Bus error" and nothing is displayed. How can I solve the problem ? Testing with a simple QVTKWidget window (with nothing else) produces the same error.I'm guessing it coming from the combination of QT, VTK and Mac system.By the way, QT and VTK are build qt mac bus with Cocoa. Before being able to compile the code, I have followed this thread : http://public.kitware.com/pipermail/vtkusers/2010-April/108579.html to solve the problem with "fobjc-gc" linking errors.BestJames._______________________________________________ Powered by www.kitware.com Visit other Kitware open-source projects at http://www.kitware.com/opensource/opensource.htmlPlease keep messages on-topic and check the VTK FAQ at: http://www.vtk.org/Wiki/VTK_FAQFollow this link to subscribe/unsubscribe: http://www.vtk.org/mailman/listinfo/vtkusers Sean McBride Reply | Threaded Open this post in threaded view ♦ ♦ | Report Content as Inappropriate ♦ ♦ Re: "Bus error" in application with QT/VTK on Mac OSX 10.5.8 On Tue, 21 Aug 2012 11:01:29 +0100, Malsoaz James said: >I have been able to successfully build QT and VTK for Mac OSX. You don't really give enough information for us to help you... what would be useful to know is: what is the backtrace at the time of the crash?
