I have tried: reboot shutdown -r now The runlevel command returns 5. Any other options for bus error core dumped ubuntu getting this server to reboot? This is a remote machine, so I don't want to just shut it down if I can avoid that. I am trying to reboot because of a journal abort on /, so / is read-only. Most commands now return 'bus error' linux share|improve this question asked Aug 24 '09 at 13:06 Kyle Brandt♦ 57.7k41217385 A bus error is typically a result of a corrupted binary. One place I worked people would complain that the system was broken because their long running simulation would crash with a bus error whenever they compiled another simulation. "What did you call the simulation?" "huh" "okay -- what do you type to run the simulation?" "a.out" "okay, maybe you should rename your programs before you run them..." sigh. –chris Aug 24 '09 at 13:29 Oh -- except for netscape. For that, bus error was one of two common ways it exited. It was about 2/1 segfault vs bus error, but they changed it up to keep the internet fun... –chris Aug 24 '09 at 13:30 add a comment| 6 Answers 6 active oldest votes up vote 11 down vot

That will typically cause a massive disaster. In general, you typically need to boot off another disk to rebuild root. And if you're using tar, this will imply that the tar archive needs to have been created with relative pathnames. Actually I would never attempt to recover root from a tar archive. I would reload the OS and then use the tar arcgive to grab a few files like /etc/paaswd and so on. I can't get more specific since I don't use SCO. I hope some SCO folks will jump in here with some more help. The purpose of the tool is to access/configure a PCI-express cards that has some firmware running on it. I made some slight change to code, nothing significant and suddenly got a "Bus error". I know that is is caused by unaligned memory access, but in the above context is it bus error core more likely to be in the firmware memory, i.e a firmware read across the PCI-express bus. I certainly don't believe that my small software change could have caused the "Bus error". Another surprising fact is that a different version of software is working well with this firmware. Can anyone throw some light on the issue. linux debugging bus share|improve this question edited May 3 '11 at 13:44 skaffman 278k63619658 asked May 3 '11 at 13:40 liv2hak 3,8941759109 closed as off-topic by Ciro Santilli 烏坎事件2016六四事件 法轮功, Yu Hao, Chris Loonam, John Pirie, Rob Aug 7 '15 at 16:35 This question appears to be off-topic.
