account only takes a few minutes. Join Now I have a Windows 2003 server and a couple of XP, Vista and Windows 7 machines. When I edit the content of the host file on any client machine and try to save, I get a message saying "Cannot create the C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\hosts file. Make sure that the path and filename are correct." The error above is from an XP machine. Reply Subscribe View Best Answer RELATED TOPICS: Client wants us to add a record to the host file??? Need to update host file on all machines not working   6 Replies Anaheim OP Best Answer fred fredburger Jul 9, 2010 at 5:54 UTC 1st Post Two quick ideas... Are you trying to write to that location within a script of some sort? If so, maybe Windows isn't installed in C:\Windows, you can use the %WINDIR% environment variable instead Is the hosts file read-only? 0 Jalapeno OP Helpful Post erpara Jul 9, 2010 at 5:57 UTC Are you editing the file as an admin? Also, something to try is to save the file to your desktop, then copy the file and paste it into the etc folder to see if that gets you anything different. It's a workaround that worked for me on Windows 7 when i had the same problem... 0 Mace OP Helpful Post Texkonc Jul 9, 2010 at 6:14 UTC Right click file and go to properties. Unchecked read only. Then make your changes. Then save and close and make read only again. 0 Jalapeno OP UYI6067 Jul 9, 2010 at 6:49 UTC The hosts file was read-only on the XP machine. I change that in the file properties and that worked for XP. For Vista, I copied the hosts file to my desktop, edited it and then copied it back to the default location, replacing the original. Your comments helped me resolve this issue. Thanks guys. 0 Pimiento OP ramesh.mani.79 Apr 13, 2013 at 2:43 UTC 1st Post Try this: Start → All Programs → Accessories → right-click "Notepad" → Run as administrator → Modify hosts file appropriately → Save 0 Poblano OP SteveGossett Feb 10, 2014 at 6:13 UTC Late reply to this but I needed something quick to use within the realm of web QA testing that I do and threw a tool together that was perfect for my need (stevegossett.wordpress.com). Not saying its for everyone but that it just worked for my situation. I primarily use it on Windows 7 and have not tested it on Windows 8. I didn't know about the free HostsMan tool out there at the time so that may be a better solution for people. My tool is not pretty by any means, its just a tool I threw together out of personal need. 0 This discussion has been inactive for over a year.
