Communication Error 5657
error code 5657, so then I tried the manual route having downloaded apnc-021109-053-20120413.deb to my C drive. I get the status importing file and then 10 minutes later or so the error code 5657. Since I have a firewall blocking unauthorised outgoing messages, I assumed that would be the cause and, after trying the usual techniques for a new piece of software trying to access the internet, eventually switched the firewall off completely, but no change. All other conditions mentioned in the knowledge base on 5657 are OK, so any other ideas would be welcome. I'm running Windows 7 Pro (32 bit) with 4GB RAM and Sophos anti-virus and firewall through a Netgear Rangemax modem/router running MyBookLive on a 100Mb link. Many thanks cman548 2012-07-24 15:18:09 UTC #2 trying finding the very last of the 01. firmwares and update to that first. I remember that you had to update to that first, before you could jump over to 02. Alucardx23 2012-07-24 15:38:45 UTC #3 Hi, in this case you might want to do a factory restore and then try again to update the firmware. 2TB Network-Attached Storage. After configuring it in the way I liked it (just storage without any extras) and removing all of the default folders (Shared Music, Shared Pictures) from the Public share so I can use http://www.facepunch.com/threads/1077611-WD-MyBookLive-needs-OS-reinstall. my own organising system etc. This worked fine for about a day, then a red http://www.dreamgreenhouse.com/reviews/2011/wdmybook/ light appeared on the front. I logged in to it's dashboard and it said nothing was wrong apart from a new firmware update was avaliable, so I went to 'install & reboot'. The light turned violet indicating it was updating, the progress bar on the dashboard slowly completed the 'downloading' part and moved on to 'upgrading'. After about 10 minutes, it communication error came up with a 'Communication error: KB 5657', not in those exacts words but basically referring to a knowledge base article which I could never find. One with the same number but completely different circumstances was there though, and suggested that it was some kind of network failure between the NAS and the Dashboard, however the network was fine. The light remained violet so I decided to leave it for a bit. 10 hours had communication error 5657 passed before I decided that it was time to unplug it, despite the warnings in the manual. The website said it should only take a few minutes to upgrade the firmware. I figured it was frozen, hence the 'communication error' and then unplugged it. After setting it back up again, the NAS OS seems to start up, crash and reboot continuously. (The light turns blue and occasionally flashes yellow, blue indicating power, yellow indicating start-up, while the green light never appears) There are many alternate NAS operating systems, and the source code and compiled version for the one this uses is actually avaliable for download on the website, so I am quite happy to re-install an OS. However, there is seemingly no way to actually get access to the data on the hard-drive and I think my attempts so far may have voided the warranty, however I didn't register it in the first place so I don't even think it applies (the warranty registration was in the dashboard). As far as I can tell, it appears to have two 1TB hard drives inside it with a circuit board with various components in between them. I am hoping to find some suggestion as to if there is any way to get access to data via the network (without the OS) or some way of actually opening
in a relatively compact and discreet device. We are guessing that the name comes from the similarity in appearance to a hardback book (if not a slightly grey one). The device is available in 1Tb, 2Tb and 3Tb versions. In The Box In the box are the main NAS device, a plug-in PSU (rated 12V at 1.5A), the software on CD-ROM and a paper quick-start guide. Setup & Configuration Installing the hardware is simply a matter of connecting the device to its power supply and a wired network connection. After a few seconds, the subtle blue LED on the front turns green, to show it has acquired and IP address using DHCP. We installed the supplied software on a Windows 7 laptop. The CD-ROM includes PDF manuals. On hitting the 'discover' button, the software locates the device on the network (approximately 5 seconds) and then offers to map it as a local drive on your PC. You also get the option to install 'WD Quick View', which adds an icon to the system tray. Once the software is installed you can move onto the 'next steps'. Open your My Book Live This takes you to the network share and the 'public' folder, which contains 4 folders: Shared Music Shared Pictures Shared Video Software - This is a copy of the CD-ROM contents and also the help pages that some links in the software use. Backup Options There are three backup options depending on whether you are using a Windows PC or Mac. WD Smartware This software needs to be installed first. The first thing the install process did, was uninstall the WD Quick View software! Well it said it did, but it still remained running and available in the system tray. It installed WD Smartware version 1.4.2.5. If you then launch this software it analyses you machine to see what categories of content are stored on it. This software is covered in its own section later on. Time Machine Windows Backup Setup my My Book Live This takes you to a webpage on the NAS device (http://192.168.1.108/UI/). As you can see, ours informed us that we needed to update the firmware but attempting this resulted in an error (Communication error: Please see Knowledge Base article 5657). It worked on the second attempt though. The light on the front turned white whilst the update process was underway. The firmware update took about 10 minutes to download (over ADSL) and about 5-6 minutes to
