City Beans 67 DistroUbuntu 12.04 Precise Pangolin ata1.01: status: {DRDY ERR} Hey, Ubuntu works fine until I startx, at which point, my desktop launches, but my system monitor reads 100% processor usage. If I click on anything, the system becomes unresponsive. When I start gnome, if I go back down to the cli, I can see the following errors being thrown. Code: [various changing numbers] ata1.01: status: {DRDY ERR} [various changing numbers] ata1.01 ERROR: {unc} [various changing numbers] ata1.01 exception Emask 0x0 SAct 0x0 SErr 0x0 action 0x0 [various changing numbers] ata1.01 cmd c8/00:08:5f:99:e5/00:00:00:00:00/f0 tag 0 dma 4069 in Can anyone help me with this? Any advice at all would be good, even if it's not a solution. Sounds like the hard drive could be on the way out. The manufacturer of the hard drive may have a diagnostic tool on their website, and it may help, but backup all the data that you can. Now. going to be spammy, I think it is important to document this so we can all drdy err abrt learn from it... The drive I posted about a while back: https://www.redhat.com/archives/fedora-devel-list/2008-July/msg00426.html Is now definitely failing as of about 3-4 weeks ago. It's at the stage where https://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1252285 the drive still seems to be mostly readable, but IO bandwidth has dropped like a rock. Booting Fedora takes like 20 minutes. Same thing two previous failed drives did. The drive has a manufacture date of May 2007. I have no reason to believe the drive has been mistreated, no more than typical https://www.redhat.com/archives/rhl-devel-list/2008-December/msg02951.html laptop wear and tear. It is a "desktop replacement" laptop and is rarely transported. Fortunately /home seems to be readable. Media errors show up in the syslog, but no IO errors are turning up in user space. The WinXP partition seems to be trashed, however. So much for my wife's Half Life 2 and Spore savegames... ata1.00: exception Emask 0x0 SAct 0x0 SErr 0x0 action 0x0 ata1.00: BMDMA stat 0x25 ata1.00: cmd 25/00:00:00:58:08/00:04:00:00:00/e0 tag 0 dma 524288 in res 51/40:0f:f1:59:08/40:02:00:00:00/e0 Emask 0x9 (media error) ata1.00: status: { DRDY ERR } ata1.00: error: { UNC } ata1.00: configured for UDMA/100 ata1: EH complete ata1.00: exception Emask 0x0 SAct 0x0 SErr 0x0 action 0x0 ata1.00: BMDMA stat 0x25 ata1.00: cmd 25/00:00:00:58:08/00:04:00:00:00/e0 tag 0 dma 524288 in res 51/40:0f:f1:59:08/40:02:00:00:00/e0 Emask 0x9 (media error) ata1.00: status: { DRDY ERR } ata1.00: error: { UNC } ata1.00: configured for UDMA/100 ata1: EH complete ata1.00: exception Emask 0x0 SAct 0x0 SErr 0x0 action 0x0
