I as using a avg rescue cd, and for some reason it informed of errors from smartctrl in the very beginning before the scan. So, I decided to run the Seatools utility and also Drive Fitness Test from hitachi. Ran both the short and the long tests which the drive passed. Also used Part Image and ran gsmartcontrol with the long and short tests. The log is the following from that: Code: smartctl 5.41 2011-06-09 r3365 [i686-linux-3.0.0-pmagic] (local build) Copyright (C) 2002-11 by Bruce Allen, http://smartmontools.sourceforge.net === START OF INFORMATION SECTION === Model Family: Seagate Device Model: Serial Nu

Messages: 270 Thanks Received: 18 Trophy Points: 26 When a drive throws an "Error: ICRC, ABRT" error, what has been everybody's experience with it, bad drive, or bad controller, something else? Or https://forums.freenas.org/index.php?threads/error-icrc-abrt.26901/ is this error too general to tell anything by its own? Thanks. The full description is as follows. Interface CRC error during Ultra DMA transfer - often either a bad cable or power problem, drdy err though possibly an incorrect Ultra DMA mode setting by the driver. Command aborted - either command not supported, unable to complete, or interface CRC (with ICRC). Sounds to me, like this is exactly the type of error that would increment the, “199 UDMA_CRC_Error_Count” SMART counter. However this would be triggered by communication between the computer and the drive, rather than a self-test. If you get this error all the time, then diagnostic error icrc abrt is easy, move the drive to a known-good port, or a known good computer, with a known good cable, and test again to determine if the cause is the bad drive, the bad port, or the bad cable. If you get this error once in a long while; then I am not sure. There are people who say that occasional ATA errors are nothing to worry about. But I am not so sure. SMART and smartmontools I have a brand new Hitachi drive (250 gb and only 3 days old). I have installed a dual boot system with XP and Suse 10.3. I am also a noob, so please bear with me... I keep getting SMART error messages when I'm in Suse. The Hitachi diagnostic tool tells me the disk is fine and smartmontools says "PASSED" after running this command "smartctl -H /dev/sda" I have also run a couple of short and long selftests and no errors show up. # smartctl -l selftest /dev/sda smartctl version 5.37 [i686-suse-linux-gnu] Copyright (C) 2002-6 Bruce Allen Home page is smartmontools Home Page (last updated $Date: 2008/06/16 17:31:16 $) === START OF READ SMART DATA SECTION === SMART Self-test log structure revision number 1 Num Test_Description Status Remaining LifeTime(hours) LBA_of_first_error # 1 Short offline Completed without error 00% 43 - # 2 Short offline Completed without error 00% 41 - # 3 Extended offline Aborted by host 90% 37 - # 4 Extended offline Completed without error 00% 36 - # 5 Short offline Completed without error 00% 34 - Yet the smart log throws out the following Error 68 occurred at disk power-on lifetime: 43 hours (1 days + 19 hours) When the command that caused the error occurred, the device was active or idle .
