affects project (?) Also affects distribution/package Nominate for series Bug Description Binary package hint: empathy Using MSN with empathy is almost impossible since most of the time it reports "Network error". Please note, that I have no problem with other IM clients using the same user. Also, there can't be major network problem: I am using 1Gbit LAN connection to the ISP's backbone network, also as I've mentioned, no problem with other clients. Also it's a bit misleading to show "edit contact" window, since user can't edit any setting which can solve this problem, I think :) It's up-to-date ubuntu karmic running on 32 bit x86 platform. This issue occurs http://askubuntu.com/questions/561478/pidgin-will-not-connect-to-msn-any-longer in both my Ubuntu 12.04 machine and my WIn7 machine. Trillian on my windows machine connects just fine to MSN, so I dont suspect a network issue. My settings are: messenger.hotmail.com Port: 1863 Proxy type. Use environmental settings The "use HTTP method option results in it actually trying to connect, but it never does, it just says "connecting.....". I have attempted to change just about every other setting, with no luck. What could be going on? connection pidgin msn share|improve this question asked Dec 15 '14 at 0:52 Banquo 2113 add a comment| 2 Answers 2 active oldest votes up vote 2 down vote If I were to guess, I'd say it stopped working slightly more than 6 weeks ago, when the MSN messenger network was closed down, so I don't know what Trillian is connecting to. Microsoft wants you to move to skype, which is available for ubuntu, and you should be able to log in using the same microsoft account and find all your friends still there. share|improve this answer answered Dec 15 '14 at 1:04 Sir Substan
Empathy includes a debugging window that allows you to show debugging output from Empathy and other Telepathy components, namely Mission Control and most connection managers. To retrieve a debug log, open type Alt+F2 in GNOME https://wiki.gnome.org/Apps/Empathy/Debugging Shell and then type empathy-debugger in Empathy's contact list. You can also start it from a terminal. This will show you the debugging logs for running Telepathy components. You can select the http://scribblepadofdoom.tumblr.com/post/1305141170/telepathy-empathy component using the drop-down menu in the top-left corner of the window, which also lists the protocols the various connection managers are responsible for. To save a debug log to a file, click empathy msn Save. To copy the log to the clipboard so you can paste it elsewhere, click Copy. Normally the debug logs for both Empathy and the appropriate connection manager (e.g. gabble for XMPP, salut for Bonjour, butterfly for MSN, idle for IRC) will be required. Debugging (Old Way) Please try using the debug window first! It's much easier. These instructions are only needed in particularly unusual cases. empathy msn connection Here is an example using telepathy-gabble (the Jabber connection manager); for more details and instructions for other protocols, see the Debugging page on the Telepathy wiki. Sign out from all your IM accounts by setting your status to Offline. Kill all Telepathy-related processes. Quitting Empathy should be enough, but to make sure you may want to kill other Telepathy components after quitting Empathy: $ killall mission-control telepathy-gabbleStart programs in different consoles: $ GABBLE_LOGFILE=/tmp/gabble.log GABBLE_PERSIST=1 GABBLE_DEBUG=all WOCKY_DEBUG=all G_MESSAGES_DEBUG=all /usr/lib/telepathy/telepathy-gabble $ EMPATHY_LOGFILE=/tmp/empathy.log EMPATHY_DEBUG=all G_MESSAGES_DEBUG=all empathyNote that, depending on your platform, /usr/lib/telepathy might need to be replaced by /usr/libexec. If you want to debug audio or video issues, you can instead start Empathy with: $ EMPATHY_LOGFILE=/tmp/empathy.log GST_DEBUG=\*fsrtp\*:5 EMPATHY_DEBUG=all empathySet your status back to Available. Reproduce your issue, and then attach both /tmp/gabble.log and /tmp/empathy.log to your bug report. Getting a Stack Trace The most useful debugging information you can provide when encountering a crash in Empathy is by providing a stack trace. Install debuging symbols for Empathy and telepathy-*. Start Empathy with gdb $ gdb empathyRun Empathy (gdb) runMake it crash Get the stacktrace (gdb) thread apply all bt fullCopy the output of bt to a pastebin
