Socket Error 10013 Windows Live Mail

Messages (15) msg169055 - (view) Author: James Hutchison (Jimbofbx) http://stackoverflow.com/questions/550032/what-causes-python-socket-error Date: 2012-08-24 17:42 Windows 7 64-bit, Python 3.2.3 This is a very odd issue and I haven't figured out what caused it. I have a python script that runs continuously. When it receives a request to do a task, it creates a new thread (not a new process), does the task, then sends out an e-mail http://bugs.python.org/issue15779 to indicate it was done. It doesn't do this a lot (maybe 10 - 30 times a day). This is all the script does. Well today, it randomly broke. It was working fine, then suddenly I was getting the following error when it would create an SMTP object: socket.error: [Errno 10013] An attempt was made to access a socket in a way forbidden by its access permissions What I found was, even after trying a different script that did nothing but create a simple SMTP connection to localhost, running with admin privileges, and even after rebooting the machine, I was getting this error. I checked my firewall and didn't see any changes (I share a group policy so I do not have full control). I also tried the script on a different machine and found no issue. The issue also persisted between IDLE and simply running python.exe When I tried to debug the issue, I discovered the following piece of code made the issue
When I tried Django'smanage.py runserverwhich defaults to localhost:8000, I got this error:Django version 1.1 alpha 1 SVN-10020, using settings 'mashup.settings'Development server is running at http://127.0.0.1:8000/Quit the server with CTRL-BREAK.Error: [Errno 10013] http://matt-l.blogspot.com/2009/03/windows-vista-deception-error-errno.html An attempt was made to access a socket in a way forbidden by its access permissionsIt turns out Aptana Studio is also using port 8000 for it internal server, so Vista instead of reporting that port 8000 is already binded to, rambles about access permissions. I had been doing the same thing in Windows XP, but apparently XP lets you run two servers on the same port without complaining (crazy!)Solution:manage.py runserver error 10013 localhost:8001Matt Posted by - at 9:46 AM Labels: [Errno 10013], Django, Vista 15 comments: Richard KuestersMay 22, 2009 at 11:23 AMha! the same here. thanks for the solution :)ReplyDeleteMattJune 13, 2009 at 10:14 PM@Richard: Anyway, my Vista test failed miserably. I couldn't stand having Vista chew up my 3GB of RAM without mercy, so I made the jump over to Ubuntu, and now Ubuntu doesn't know what to do with soo much socket error 10013 memory at its disposal ;-)ReplyDeleteJustin HamadeDecember 9, 2009 at 4:45 PMHad this as well on windows 7, you think the error would be more descriptive that the port is already in use.ReplyDeleteKeepon KeepinonMarch 11, 2010 at 4:49 PMThanks, saved me an hour of headache!ReplyDeleteΔΕΝ ΞΕΡΩ ΕΙΠΑΜΕ !March 30, 2010 at 5:27 AMThaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaank you!!First time a problem gets to be solved that fast and efficient!ReplyDeleteEaswarMay 2, 2010 at 11:11 AMThanks mate !ReplyDeletemadewulfJune 11, 2010 at 6:43 AMThanks !ReplyDeleteMichele De RoseJune 21, 2010 at 7:48 AMAptana HTTP Server uses, on default, ports from 8000 to 8500, so the problem can comeback also with django server started on 8001 port...my suggest (in Aptana): Window -> Preferences -> Aptana -> HTTP Server: change value of Port(s) field in [8001-8500].in this way the port 8000 (used by default from django built-in server) is free again ;)ReplyDeleteEyal SelaJuly 8, 2010 at 3:40 PMDid it for me, Thanks!ReplyDeletejeff.ohJuly 14, 2010 at 4:42 AMThank you! It greatly works for me! :)ReplyDeletexelle_zhanneJanuary 10, 2011 at 4:47 AMhow to do it pls.ReplyDeletecosmopolitanJanuary 27, 2012 at 2:10 PMsame here!
