02:26 PMI have a basic MSI installation which generates an unAdvertised shortcut in the Start Menu. In the msi log file the directory is reported to be: Executing op: SetTargetFolder(Folder=C:\ProgramData\Start Menu\Programs\DeLorme\Street Atlas USA 2007 Plus\) At first I thought it had something to do with the target directory. However, after testing in house, our log files say the same thing but we do not get the error 1320. The actual directory when you browse to Start Menu is different from what the log file states. The actual path is C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\DeLorme\Street Atlas USA 2007 Plus\. Several customers report this problem when installing. We are not able to reproduce this in house and I am not certain where to look for more information. I have tried searching for "Vista CreateShortcut", Vista error 1320, etc but without any real leads. The setup is compiled to RequireAdministrator for privileges. I am attaching a msi log file of the setup that fails. Does anyone have any ideas on what could be causing this to fail for these customers? Thanks. DLee6502-14-2007, 02:10 PM*** Bump *** More Info: All of these customers have new machines with Vista pre-installed on it. So it is not an upgrade from XP or anything like that. This is occuring on new machines that ship with Vista installed. mhonzell01-21-2008, 09:56 AMSome users move their Documents folder to a different path for ease of backup or separation of applications and data. Unfortunately, many vendors unwittingly hard-code installation paths into their installers that use the default location of the Documents folder. When the installer attempts to create the path desired (e.g. C:\Users\username\Documents\SpecialFolder) Vista gets caught in a loop trying to create a Documents folder. The Documents folder is special and cannot be duplicated under the Users path. This loop eventually results in an Error 1320: path too long message (if you're lucky.) To fix the problem: User: Select Start button Right-click Documents Select Properties Restore Default Location Move all files Vendor: Use the %systempath% methods for creating new directories instead of hard-coding paths within installers. fowlesp05-22-2008, 03:08 AMI have customers reporting a similar problem in Vista Home Premuim The installer is
