When you say you can boot Win XP, are you doing that from the Grub menu? Please boot your Live CD, open a terminal (applications > accessories > terminal) and post: Code: sudo fdisk -lu Adv Reply October 20th, 2008 #3 dalzate0988 View Profile View Forum Posts Private Message First Cup of Ubuntu Join Date Oct 2008 Beans 5 Re: grub error 17 cannot mount selected partition after i see t

I got the grub working, but when I try to boot my old ubuntu install from it I get: error 17 cannot mount selected partition I copied all the necessary files that the menu.lst entries refer to from an old grub install on my hard drive https://www.experts-exchange.com/questions/23942159/GRUB-error-17-cannot-mount-selected-partition.html (and all other files that werent created by the standard grub install just to be sure), and I tried changing the root (0,1) (where my old grub is) to (0,2) (where my ubuntu installation is) and to (1,0) (where the grub install on the USB stick is), and tried to boot from all of those configurations, with the same error. my hard disk setup looks like this: only 1 hard disk partition 0: windows xp 1: old grub 2: old ubuntu installation Why: I use a truecrypt encrypted windows xp so i cant load grub anymore. yes there are other work arounds but i want to do it like this. also, id like to learn how to set up grub on a usb stick properly by hand and boot operating systems from it. So how do I fix this and boot ubuntu? What my menu.lst file looks like: default 0 timeout 30 title Ubuntu 8.04.1, kernel 2.6.24-19-generic root (hd0,1) kernel /vmlinuz-2.6.24-19-generic root=UUID=f416fb1b-9142-4b43-a128-71d38df4b644 ro quiet splash initrd /initrd.img-2.6.24-19-generic quiet title Ubuntu 8.04.1, kernel 2.6.24-19-generic (recovery mode) root (hd0,1) kernel /vmlinuz-2.6.24-19-generic root=UUID=f416fb1b-9142-4b43-a128-71d38df4b644 ro single initrd /initrd.img-2.6.24-19-generic title Ubuntu 8.04.1, memtest86+ root (hd0,1) kernel /memtest86+.bin quiet 0 Quest

After spending a week-full of evenings on error 17 cannot trying to find a generic solution on the internet, I have to resort to posting about my particular situation, as I'm running out of ideas what else to try. I installed Mint 7 KDE community edition on my AMD 64x desktop. The trouble is, I'm trying to save a partition with my /home directory from the previous installation of Debian. Therefore I couldn't just format the whole drive and re-partition it for Mint. Anyway, I deleted all the other partitions and re-installed Mint onto the free space. Straight after the installation I was confronted by Grub Error 17 (which was why I had to abandon Debian in the first place as it kept messing with my partition table after the upgrades). So I followed the advice elsewhere, booted from Live CD and fixed my partition order, which now looks like this: Code: Disk /dev/sda: 250.0 GB, 250059350016 bytes 255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 30401 cylinders Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes Disk identifier: 0x4dcf4dce Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System /dev/sda1 * 1 1305 10482381 7 HPFS/NTFS /dev/sda2 1306 3829 20274030 f W95 Ext'd (LBA) /dev/sda3 3830 30401 213439558+ 7 HPFS/NTFS /dev/sda5 1306 2524 9791586 b W95 FAT32 /dev/sda6 2525 3829 10482381 c W95 FAT32 (LBA) Disk /dev/sdb: 40.0 GB, 40027029504 bytes 255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 4866 cylinders Units = cylinders of 160
do a fresh install of grub and the upgrade proceeded without any further problems. When I went to boot the system (dual-boot with Win 7) grub gave me error 17 "cannot mount selected partition". So I booted into rescue from the install disk thinking that maybe reinstalling grub might help, but when I ran "grub-install /dev/sda" I got the message that "/dev/sda does not have any corresponding BIOS drive" (I have Windows on SATA 1 sda and Fedora on SATA 2 sdb). I exited rescue mode rebooted entered BIOS and swapped the drive order and restarted. Success!... Well almost. The progress bar goes all the way across the screen to the point the login screen should come up then it hangs...
