On boot, I get the infamous "Error 17" after "GRUB loading stage 1.5". I know that this somehow means that GRUB can't find the root/boot partition, but I don't know how to fix it. This is how my partitions are set up: sda1 Windows FAT32 sda2 Extended Partition sda5 Linux ext4 sda6 Linux swap sda7 Windows Data FAT32 sda8 Windows Data FAT16 Note that there is no sda3 or sda4. Why, I have no idea. (Maybe those are reserved for primary partitions?) Compared to the previous Xubuntu install, the installer decided to switch the positions of the Linux and Swap partitions. So /dev/sda5 would have to be it. I found several hints how to fix GRUB, but they seem contraditory to me. Most refer to something like this: sudo grub grub>root (hd0,0) grub>setup (hd0) grub>quit I simply don't know how "sda5" translates to "hd0,x", given the extended partition and the strange numbering of partitions sda1-sda8. OTOH, I read somewhere that this procedure is for an old version of grub, so it might be wrong in the first place. Another thing I'm not sure about is whether maybe what I'm seeing might be remnants of the old GRUB install, not the new one. Thanks in advance Alex Adv Reply April 20th, 2012 #2 oldfred View Profile View Forum Posts Private Message Super Master Roaster Join Date Jun 2009 Location SW Forida BeansHidden! Dis

To be simply put, it’s a boot loader package from the GNU error 17 while booting Linux project. It’s the common and reference implementation of a multiboot Linux system. It allows you to choose which operating system or specific kernel to boot into.In this article, we’ll be looking into https://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1962091 figuring out some common grub errors and hopefully, work out a fix for them. Repairing a broken Grub 2 bootloader: There are tons of us here who broke their grub thanks to autoupdates through apt or similar. Hopefully, this will allow them an way to fix their system without reinstall.Grub now features an advanced rescue mode, truly a godsend for people who somehow messed their https://www.unixmen.com/fixing-a-few-common-grub-errors-broken-bootloader-and-error-1715/ MBR tables up.You want to trigger that and get into grub. Then execute the commands below to get back into an working desktop first.lsset prefix=(hdX,Y)/boot/grubset root=(hdX,Y)setls /bootinsmod /boot/grub/linux.modlinux /vmlinuz root=/dev/sdXY roinitrd /initrd.imgboot The X and Ys are to be filled in with your own HDD information. If you only have one HDD, it’ll be X=0, Y=1 and so on. At this point, you should atleast be able to boot up normally. You’re almost done. sudo update-grub sudo grub-install /dev/sdX Execute those two commands, replacing X with the partition your linux is installed on. For me, it was ‘a’. Voila! You’ve fixed your broken ‘auto-updated’ MBR records. Fixing grub error 17/15 Grub error 17 is one of the most common error messages that you’re likely to encounter using the Grub bootloader. The root cause behind it is a messed up partition table disk order. To fix this, grab a live cd and boot into your desktop.Execute the following: sudo fdisk –l You’re likely to get something like the following: Disk /dev/sdb: 750.1 GB, 750156374016 bytes255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 91201 cylindersUnits = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytesDisk identifier: 0x000dc2a4 Device Boot Start End Blocks Id

Installation finished. No error reportedbut it doesn't fix the problem,I've also tried error 17 to "Install LVM2 support in GRUB" (I have only /boot as primary partition, all the rest is in a LVM2 partition), doesn't do the trick. Finally, I've found that with sudo fdisk -l (/dev/sda1 is /boot)Code: [Select]/dev/sda1 * 1 487 3905536 83 Linux
La partition 1 ne se termine pas sur une frontière de cylindre.does mean "Partition 1 does not end on cylinder boundary.". probably the problem ...Any idea how to fix it ? (without reinstalling ...)ThanksDiego Logged grub error 17 JordanU Administrator Newbie Posts: 43 Re: Grub Error 17 with Ubuntu 10.04 lucid : how to fix it ? « Reply #1 on: 2010/05/08, 21:56:39 pm » Do you have another hard drive on this machine?"Error 17" is actually a grub legacy error message, so my guess is that you have another drive that has grub legacy installed to it that has become the primary boot device for some reason. If you do have multiple hard drives then first try changing the boot order in the BIOS, then try installing grub to all drives.
