Rarely https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/321446 does MS advice help! I opened the win.ini in notebook and found the following: [PrestoApp] PageManager=C:\PROGRA~1\NewSoft\PRESTO~1\Prestopm.exe [Printfun] Directory=C:\PROGRA~1\NewSoft\PRESTO~1 [MCI Extensions.BAK] m2v=MPEGVideo How do I correct this win.ini cannot access crap? thanks! I just forgot to mention it. Rename Win.ini and Install Office 1. Locate the Windows directory on your computer. 2. In the Windows directory, locate the Win.ini file, and right-click the file. On the menu that appears, click Rename. 3. Type win.old and then press ENTER. 4. Restart the computer. 5. Install Office 2000. 6. Repeat steps 1 and 2, and rename the file back to Win.ini. 7. Restart the computer MisterT, Nov 23, 2007 #3 MisterT Thread Starter Joined: Nov 23, 2007 Messages: 14 Is there a way to obtain a new win.ini? Presto Page manager was installed after I got a new printer. I have uninstalled Presto Page Manager and reinstalled it to no avail. I do not understand why or how this happened. What the heck is a win.ini and why can O not change it or get a new one as a download. This is very frustrating because it prevents me from updating Windows apps. MisterT, Nov 23, 2007 #4 ~Candy~ Retired Administrator Joined: Jan 27, 2001 Messages: 103,706 Are you sure that the win.ini file was in the correct directory? And that it wasn't a backup win.ini? ~Candy~, Nov 2
update file C:\windows\win.ini Permissions were right. I could rename the file, so that means it was not in use by some other program... but apparently it was Trend Micro http://www.geeklab.info/2011/04/error-1913-setup-cannot-update-file-cwindowswin-ini/ blocking the installation. Using services.msc I disabled all Trend Micro stuff, finished the install and rebooted to get all services running as normal. © GeekLabInfo Error 1913: Setup cannot update file C:\windows\win.ini http://blog.technotesdesk.com/error-1913-setup-cannot-update-file-c-windowswin-ini/ is a post from GeekLab.info. The installation started but always failed and you receive a message with error code 1913 that says: Error 1913: Setup cannot update file C:WINDOWSwin.ini. You are a local administrator and you are signed in as the Administrator You verified that the WIN.ini file exists in your root directory C:Windowswin.ini Tried to relaunch the installation of MS Office and the install failed again You will get this message usually when you are trying to upgrade your old MS Office 2003 to MS Office 2007 or even when like me trying to install new MS Office 2007 installation on new and clean computer. This can be easy fixed. Usually the problem is connected with your antivirus solution that you are using on the computer.
