After searching for several hours I finally decided to post a question and wouldn't you know it after I post the question I find the answer in another post.Need to download latest VC2.5 iso or zip file and run the vmware-licenseserver.exe from there. It's a different version that the one that you download separately. This version worked for me: 2.5.0.6427 Like Show 0 Likes (0) Actions 2. I am planning clean installation VSphere vCenter server and I have several ESX 3.5 hosts too. I was trying to https://communities.vmware.com/thread/222206?tstart=0 install VMware License Server on a Window Server 2008 32bit server and the install would fail saying it cannot start system services. After checking to make sure that I had not made some dumb mistake with my account I hit the intertubes and found that others had the same issue. I was able to get pass this http://www.virtualizetips.com/2010/06/03/error-while-installing-vmware-license-server-on-windows-2008/ issue by downloading the latest copy of Virtual Center server 2.5 update 6 and then extracting the License server install file from the VPX folder. Seems that the copy from the install .iso file is newer than the file available for direct downloading. Maybe VMware can fix this soon. I did not try it but according to some other posts the version in VC 2.5 U5 might also work. Once I installed this version it worked the first time. Service VMware License Server (VMware License Server) failed to start. Verify that you have sufficient privileges to start system services." I had http://terenceluk.blogspot.com/2010/11/problems-installing-vmware-license.html to do an upgrade of vCenter from 4.0 to 4.1 for one of the environments we manage and came across a problem while trying to installing the VMware License http://theether.net/kb/100176 Server on a Windows 2008 R2 64-bit server (the existing vCenter 4.0 was installed on a Windows 2003 R2 server). As you may already know, the licensing server is error 1920 a requirement for legacy ESX 3.x hosts and because we still had quite a few of them in the environment I needed to upgrade, I also needed to move the licenses off of the old vCenter 4.0 server so we can decommission it.ProblemDuring the installation and starting of the services, the error that would get thrown is the following: error 1920 service VMware License ServerError 1920. Service VMware License Server (VMware License Server) failed to start. Verify that you have sufficient privileges to start system services. SolutionLong story short, the reason why it failed was because of the version of the License Server I tried to install with which I downloaded here: http://download3.vmware.com/software/vi/VMware-licenseserver-2.0.0-27704.exe I've also tried downloading another version that didn't work as well:http://downloads.vmware.com/d/details/esx_35_licenseserver_dt/dGViZGVoKmJkZXBo After searching around, I finally found that you're supposed to download VMware vCenter Server 2.5 (the full version) and run the License Server installation instead:http://downloads.vmware.com/d/details/vc250u6/dGViZGpwQGJkZXBo Seeing how the full version was 625MB (zip file) or 854 (DVD image) download, I had to start it and step away for awhile to wait till the download was done.Once you've completed the download, simply execute the VMware-licenseserver executable in the VMware-VIMSetup-2.5.0-U5-English folder to install the license server only. If you're interested in the troubleshooting process, please continue reading:Demonstration of the ProblemAfter successfully upgrading vCenter from 4.0 to 4.1, I went ahead to install the License Server that I found here: http://download3.vmware.com/software/vi/VMware-licenseserver-2.0.0-27704.exe The install was pretty
upgrade there are a number of considerations to a successful deployment. If the deployment is to Windows Server 2008 R2, there are a number of caveats to successful implementation. The downloadable license server VMware-licenseserver-64192.exe does not install on Windows Server 2008 R2: http://downloads.vmware.com/d/details/esx_35_licenseserver_dt/dGViZGVoKmJkZXBo It will fail to install with the following error: "Error 1920. Service VMware License Server failed to start. Verify that you have sufficient privileges to start system services." In addition, critical ports are blocked by the firewall on Windws Server 2008 R2, resulting in the following error on the vCenter client: "Call "LicenseManager.QueryUsage" for object "LicenseManager" on vCenter Server "vc.domain.com" failed." Resolution Install the license server from VirtualCenter 2.5 Update 6, available in the ISO image or downloadable from here: http://theether.net/download/VMware/VMware-licenseserver.exe Once the license server is installed, open the following firewall ports: netsh advfirewall firewall add rule name=FlexLM dir=in action=allow protocol=TCP localport=27000 netsh advfirewall firewall add rule name=FlexLM dir=in action=allow protocol=TCP localport=27010 Configure the VI3 license server fully qualified domain name in the vCenter client from Administration | vCenter Server Settings | Licensing References Unable to install the license server on Windows Server 2008 http://kb.vmware.com/kb/1018118 Configuring a legacy license server to manage ESX/ESXi 3.x hosts in vCenter Server 4.x http://kb.vmware.com/kb/1010704 Products VMware vCenter Server 4.1 VMware ESX 3.5 VMware ESX 3 Microsoft Windows Server 2008 R2 RTM Created: 12th November 2010 Updated: 12th November 2010 Tweet © 2005-2016 Jamie Morrison
