First seen in Sophos Anti-Virus for Windows 2000+ Operating system Windows Vista Cause The Windows Event Log cannot be accessed. This is not a problem with our software but a Microsoft operating system issue. What To Do Check that the Event log is accessible and that the service ('Windows Event Log') is running. You failed to start may find that it is not and that other system services may not be running. This would suggest that it is a known issue with a Windows update for Vista that affects the Access Control List on the registry. You can try to install Service Pack 1, but you may find that that will also fail or to reset the permissions on the registry using subinacl. This is best done on the advice of Microsoft. Note:This is not a Sophos issue, but a Microsoft issue and you should contact Microsoft for assistance. If the above does not apply, continue troubleshooting the issue as described in Sophos Anti-Virus for Windows 2000+: troubleshooting error 1920 during installation. I have a HP laptop with Windows 7 on it. It's a used laptop, I got it recently from a friend and they had Sophos antivirus on there. It sucked, but I depended on that for protection for awhile until one day I realized that Sophos wouldn't update no matter how many times I tried updating it. I decided to download the free trial of Malwarebytes after that because I had another computer (Windows XP) that had it on there and that computer was old, but it wasn't getting any viruses on it. When I downloaded the free version of Malwarebytes onto my laptop it worked great when I had what I think was just an adware infection and it prevented the adware from popping up. Then my trial ended (this happened just a few days ago), so I downloaded Malwarebytes premium today and while it seems to have gotten rid of some of the stuff that was supposedly infecting my system after I scanned it several times, the adware is still appearing everywhere. I also downloaded the Farbar Recovery Scan Tool. I ran that just now, here is the log and the additional log: Scan result of Farbar Recovery Scan Tool (FRST.txt) (x64) Version: 15-02-2015Ran by Robert_Halen
