I suggest you copy the following files on another Windows 7 windows could not start the offline files service on local computer error 3 machine which Offline Files service can start normally and import them to the problematic one. 1. Locate the cscsvc.dll file under the folder C:\Windows\System32. Remove the old one and paste the new one. 2. Navigate the following registry key on another Windows 7 machine and export it. Then, please copy and import it on the problematic machine. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\CscService If the issue persists after performing above suggestions, I suggest you run System File Checker (SFC) to verify whether any system file is corrupted. This is our first win7 machine, so I don't have another that has offline files working properly. Our other installs with properly functioning offline files are winxp pro. I could probably extract the cscsvc.dll file from the cab, but there was no media included with the new win7 laptop. Maybe the cab files are on the c: drive? I am of course unable to export the registry key for the same reason. Are there alternative ways to obtain the dll and registry entry? In any event, I will run SFC on the install. However when I run net start TestService I get a generic error:The TestService service failed to start due to the following error: The system cannot find the path specified. This same error is also written to the Event System Log, unfortunately with no more details as to which specified path net start didn't like. So I ran Filemon, but no luck there, none of the output could shed any light on my failing service. The service runs under the Local Service account. Any tips for debugging this problem? EDIT: Thanks to all for the tips. DLLs were fine, catch blocks not kicking in, I had try/catch blocks around InitializeComponent, and OnStart methods. The below-mentioned statements of checking the path was the tip-off. I've made an obvious mistake, I had run InstallUtil on my binary from a SUBST'ed drive, which reported success for some reason. Running InstallUtil from a local path fixed my problem, the service now starts correctly. windows debugging service subst share|improve this question edited Jan 18 '11 at 15:09 asked Jan 18 '11 at 4:05 Chris O 4,34921935 1 Try adding catch blocks with logging code. If the above works, I would try to check permissions on the executable file. share|improve this answer answered Jan 18 '11 at 4:36 John 4,47911333 1 also, service normally does
