In my music folder do you have a licence folder? Edited by nigglesnush85, 27 January 2008 - 08:44 PM. Regards,Alan. Hello, I am trying to recover lisenses for cd's I copied to Windows Media on my computer. The migration process is not working, and I can not play these files. (I no http://www.winvistatips.com/threads/lisences-do-not-download-error-438-despite-recovery-confirmatio.491310/ longer have these cd's, although I originally aquired them through purchase in a store.) Here is a detailed description of all messages I receive when trying to recover the lisences: When I try to play http://www.tech-archive.net/Archive/Media/microsoft.public.windowsmedia.player/2008-12/msg00274.html these cd's I get the following message in an Internet Explorer Window: "A license is required to play this file. The file you are trying to play was ripped (copied) from an audio CD. error 438 During the ripping process, the file was 'protected.' This limits the number of computers on which the file can be played. To play the file on this computer, you must download a license (a process known as 'license migration'). A license acts an electronic key that allows you to 'unlock' a protected file and play it. To download a license for this file, click Download License." I click the button, error 438 unknown and this message appears, *simultaneously* with a second. First the windows media page witht a box that states, "A license has been downloaded to your computer. You may now use the file." However.... Then immediately over that box another appears, with and "ok" box: "Error: 438: Unknown error occurred when storing your lisence." When I proceed to try to play the song, this happens all over again, exactly the same, for all the cd's I've tried to play. There are no new lisences stored on my computer after this process anywhere that I would usually look for them. This problem has gone on for months, I have tried looking for solutions in various places and nothing seems to work. I have already again today uninstalled and reinstalled the player, version 9 because I have Win98 SE. Please tell me something helpful I can do to get my music back! Thank you!!! Nicole nicolaluna, Apr 7, 2006 #1 Advertisements zachd [MSFT] Guest Uninstalling/reinstalling the player should have no effect upon this issue. Ideally you would want to rerip the CDs without DRM turned on. Since the CDs are gone, that's not easy. If you cannot restore your licenses, you can either contact actual product support- http:
Options. Then, click on the TAB titled 'Advanced'. At the bottom, you will see a section that RESETS Internet Explorer Settings. RESET ALL OF YOUR SETTINGS. Then close out of Internet Explorer entirely. Now, open your Windows Media Player, and click on a song to play so that the license website opens up and prompts you to download the license. Click on DOWNLOAD LICENSE. Now, make sure you look at EVERYTHING on your browser, because when I clicked to download license, I saw an error box pop up, but then I hit OK or whatever it said. (I was too pissed off to read it because I thought nothing I did worked.) BUT after it went away ANOTHER box popped up and so did a YELLOW BAR underneath where the toolbar normally is. I clicked on the yellow bar and downloaded whatever it said. I am 99% sure that it might say 'Windows Media Services DRM Storage Object.' I just looked through my plug-ins and I am pretty sure it's that, or something similar. Then after, make sure your put your internet settings to what you want. (Like Privacy, at least at Medium-High or however you like it.) Aaaaand that's all, took me 4 or 5 hours. -.- Anyways, hope this helped. If anyone has any questions, just ask. Thanx, Rhiannon. :) "marguerida_alton" wrote: I have WMP 10, XP home edition. I burned my CDs onto my home 'puter, tx'd a few files to my laptop using a jump drive.
