Hello, I have a Windows error code 628 vyprvpn XP Pro sitting behind a DSL gateway with NAT enabled. I have enabled on my gateway PPTP/L2P passthrough, which I error 628 windows 10 understand is GRE 47. Additionally, I have forwarded port 1723 to the ip address of the vpn server. I also set the verify ip dword VerifyAddress in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\(blah)\Class\{...}\0000 to 0. The purpose of this, http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_7-networking/pptp-error-628/b6de527c-d168-44a2-8b98-f7124078d0cf as I understand it, is so that it doesn't try and verify the checksums on the packet when it appears to be coming from a source different from what the router says. However, when I try to connect to it from outside the network, it appears as though it is going to connect and then gives error 628: "The connection was terminated by the remote computer before it http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/143533-45-error could be completed. For further assistance, click More Info....." Also, I know the user I'm trying to authenticate as has admin privileges. Does anyone have any other ideas as to what more I need to do to enable this? Thanks, Evan More about : vpn error 628 Anonymous 17 April 2004 08:22:26 Archived from groups: microsoft.public.windowsxp.work_remotely (More info?) PPTP uses IP Protocol 47 GRE and TCP 1723. L2TP uses IP Protocol 50 IPSEC and UDP 500 (and others, depending on what L2TP/IPSEC server you are using). Note that you need a hotfix to enable a L2TP VPN connection over a NAT connection (as well as a server that supports L2TP NAT-Traversal). First of all I am not 100% sure this will work on XP Pro but I have error 628 the same setup that works on my Server running Server 2003. (Pro might be missing a few major things that I need but im not sure) When people try to connect to me they get to the point where it sits on "Username and Password" then is disconnects and says ERROR 628. I have all the correct ports open and I am sitting behind a Linksys router. Should be just port 1723 forwarded on the Linksys and also enable "PPTP pass-through" on the Linksys. The latter allows the GRE protocol (protocol 47, not port 47). Also make sure any software firewalls are disabled on the XP machine. Some other security software will also block PPTP VPN's like Windows One Care, some versions of Trend Micro, Symantic A/V and others. Is the Linksys behind a basic modem or a combined modem and router unit. You cannot have 2 NAT devices so if you have a "combo" unit, it needs to be put in Bridge mode. XP will work well, but it only allows one connection at a time, and by default does not allow routing to other devices on the LAN. The routing however can be enabled in the registry if required. 0 LVL 8 Overall: Level 8 Windows XP 6 Message Expert Comment by:Milan_Ojh2009-07-08 Have a view of below mentioned link it may help you out: http://www.howtonetworking.com/vpnissues/error628.htm cheers 0 Message Author Comment by:TheTechEase2009-07-08 Yes I have port 1723 going to the XP
