Cause of Error 721 Point-to-Point Tunneling Protocol uses Generic Routing Encapsulation (GRE) for tunneled data and the error may occur if the network firewall does not permit the GRE protocol traffic. The Generic Routing https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/888201 Encapsulation protocol is used along with Point-to-Point Tunneling Protocol to create virtual private networks between the server and the client or between the clients. You may even encounter this error if the modem driver is not compatible with Windows XP. How to fix the Error 721 To resolve this error, you need to configure the network firewall so as to permit the http://www.tech-faq.com/error-721.html GRE protocol 47. Also, you need to make sure that the firewall permits the TCP traffic on port 1723. Both of these conditions are required in order to establish the virtual private network connectivity by using Point-to-Point Tunneling protocol. I was sniffing the wrong lamppost !The VPN works fine - The place where I was trying to test it was blocking the GRE packets. Client is XP pro. The server is behind a router that run NAT. When I'm connecting to the VPN server directly to the internal IP I connnect without problems. Our ISP have setup the NAT on the router to temporarily allow all IP traffic to this external IP. But when I try to VPN connect to external IP it hangs with message "verifying username/password" and then I get "error 721: Remote computer did not respond". Any ideas what might be wrong? Are any particular settings on the router needed to make this work? 0 Question by:rj2 Facebook Twitter LinkedIn Google LVL 16 Best Solution bysamccarthy You will need to verify that the ISP is letting the traffic IN from the external IP. You need to allow port 1723 TCP for PPTP and GRE, IP Protocol 47. You will also need to port forward 1723 to the Nat IP address of the Windows 2003 server doing the VPN. So, your external client sends a VPN request to the external IP. The router sees this on port 1723 and then will forward that on to the IP address of your server. 0 LVL 10 Overall: Level 10 Message Author Comment by:rj22005-03-02 Well, the ISP says that they believe everything is ok on the router, and it is setup according to the url below. http://ci
