my Win XP static IP addres. On the Win XP machine I have created an incoming connection, allowed the proper user access, and specified a seperate TCP/IP range than my home network. When I test the connection on a seperate client, I get "Error: 721 The remote compter did not respond." After researching on the internet, I've read that the error indicates GRE packets are not making it to error 718 vpn the server (which is controlled by the PPTP Pass-thru setting), and is an issue with the routers firmware. I've checked my firmware, and I have the most recent 1.52.10 version. Is there a solution to this problem? #1 mleonard, Sep 10, 2006 mleonard Member Joined: Jul 17, 2006 Messages: 71 Likes Received: 0 I emailed the same question to Linksys support. Here is their response: Normally, when setting up a VPN server behind a Linksys router, you need to open the VPN ports and even adjust the MTU setting. Aside from opening ports 1723, 500 and 50 ? 51, you may want to include port 47. Just incase after adding port 47 and you will still get the same error, try to enable the DMZ host and remove all the settings under the Port Forwarding page. This is for us to verify if there are ports missing or needed to be opened. Please refer to the steps below: 1. Adjust the MTU setting. a. Launch your Internet Explorer 5 or later version or Netscape Navigator 4 or later version. b. In the Address, Search or URL, type: http://192.168.1.1, then hit Enter or Return. c. A login screen will appear. Type admin for the passwor
Discussion in 'Cisco/Linksys Wireless Routers' started by timhar, May 17, 2007. timhar LI Guru Member I don't typically post, but this one needs to get communicated...no thanks to linksys... I've implemented several 2k3 SBS installations using linksys routers (WRT54GS) as the firewall. In all instances up to this point I've used the same configuration of port mapping; it has worked fine. My last one I ran into an issue getting the VPN to work; Error 721 everytime, and the VPN connection would hang on "verifying username and password". The error in the SBS Event log: A connection between the VPN server and the VPN client X.X.X.X has been established, but the VPN connection cannot be https://forums.anandtech.com/threads/error-721-connecting-to-vpn.1931510/ completed. The most common cause for this is that a firewall or router between the VPN server and the VPN client is not configured to allow Generic Routing Encapsulation (GRE) packets (protocol 47). Verify that the firewalls and routers between your VPN server and the Internet allow GRE packets. Make sure the firewalls and routers on the user's network are also configured to allow GRE packets. If the problem persists, have the user contact the Internet service provider http://www.linksysinfo.org/index.php?threads/vpn-not-working-error-721.21242/ (ISP) to determine whether the ISP might be blocking GRE packets I verified the DSL provider is allowing protocol 47, I validated my VPN works on the LAN side, so I call Linksys.... Asking if there is anything wrong with their latest firmware? NOPE...all works fine they say.... Well here's how I solved the problem: Using the same router WRT54GS V2, I rolled back the firmware version by version using their TFTP client. Nothing working until I got to v3.17.4 and VIOLA... VPN works! Conclusion: PPTP passthrough has issues in firmware later than V3.17.4, I've tried every version available on their FTP site and none of them later than 3.17.4 allow PPTP passthrough. Thanks Linksys for all the help and support.... you can close my ticket. timhar, May 17, 2007 #1 (You must log in or sign up to reply here.)
