What the issue is apparently Apple put in a check point feature around version 4.2.1 error code 1013 hotspot shield that checks for users who are redirecting their connections to gs.appl.com. If the itunes process suspects this, your phone firmware management process stays in recovery mode. You get error 1013 which says you have a hardware error and list numerous hardware related things for you to check. So my iphone sat on my dresser for two months under the belief that I had a hard ware issue. Well the fact of the matter is that there was nothing wrong with my phone. Apparently there are users who jail brake their iphone to run other apps, and for those users, they have an entry in their hosts file that redirects gs.apple.com to a website that is set up to assists jail break users. all this not endorsed by apple. The checkpoint feature that apple put in to detect this uses a timer and waits for a response between your system and gs.apple.com. If the timer threashold elapses, an assumption is made that you are redirecting your gs.apple.com connection, and are a jail break user. Your phone gets put into recovery mode. Problem with this is that there are ligitimet users who have host files that are ligitemt and does not redirect their connections to gs.apple.com. In my case I use a 60,000 line hosts file to redirect adware, malware, and other vulnabilary type sites. The lenth of time for my PC to search thru this file exceeds the threashol

Mar 12, 2011 Tweet 129 Comments Yesterday Tina decided it was time to update her iPhone firmware. It was probably the first software update she did since she got her iPhone 4, months ago. Because she doesn't need or even care https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2699738?start=0&tstart=0 about a jailbreak, her iPhone is clean. No jailbreak. I was watching South Park when I heard her voice from upstairs: "honey, I have a problem, it's saying something about error 1013". Damn you, iPhone, for disturbing me while watching disturbing TV shows! I had had this error 1013 before so I was confident it would be a one-minute fix… As expected, iTunes was throwing the following error message: The iPhone "Tina's iPhone" could not be updated. An unknown error occurred (1013). http://www.idownloadblog.com/2011/03/12/fix-iphone-error-1013/ Just to make sure, I go through the restore process one more time, which takes 5-10 minutes and end up with the same error message. Next step was downloading iReb, which didn't do anything. Next step was downloading TinyUmbrealla, which didn't do anything either. Without anymore ideas, I decided to Google the error, which took me to this thread on Apple's forums. After following the simple instructions detailed below, I was able to finally restore Tina's iPhone. On Mac: Open Finder Hold down COMMAND + SHIFT keys and press ‘G' Enter "/private/etc/" in the field and press "Go" Find "hosts" file in the directory Drag the file to your desktop Open it in a text editor Remove the line that has gs.apple.com entirely or put a # at the beginning of it to comment it out Save the file Drag it back to the /private/etc/ folder. On Windows: Locate the hosts file in one of the following directories: Windows 95/98/Me c:\windows\hosts Windows NT/2000/XP Pro c:\winnt\system32\drivers\etc\hosts Windows XP, Vista, 7 c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts Right click and click on "Open With…" and then click on "Notepad" on the list. Remove the line that has gs.apple.com completely and save the file. This whole operation took me a good 30 minutes, but most importantly, I missed one of my favorite South Park episodes, the one with the Dog Whisperer. But, the best part of it was that I became the "hero" who once again fixed the iPhone. Share: Tweet Follow: Follow
