Answer Connecting to an ArcSDE Geodatabase using the Direct (or 2 Tier) method has become the default standard as of ArcGIS 10.1. See The Notes on FME and Esri Compatibility page for more information on what software is required to support this method. For additional information please error creating consult the Esri documentation on Direct Connecting. As of FME 2015 the Geodatabase (ArcSDE) format supports the use of the Esri connection .sde files only. So building and testing your connection in ArcCatalog prior to using FME is recommended. Then this connection file can be used by the Geodatabase (ArcSDE) formats. Older versions of FME also use the Esri connection files or you can setup the Geodatabase (ArcSDE) format connection error creating arcsde using the information below. The Esri Legacy ArcSDE format will continue to need the following information. FME 2015 adds an option to the Connection dropdown - "Populate from Connection File" that will pre-fill the connection parameters based on what you are using in your Esri geodatabase connection file (.sde). This makes it easier to ensure that you are using the right connection parameters for your various connections. Oracle If connecting to SDE on Oracle, use the following settings in the Esri Legacy ArcSDE reader or writer database connection dialog box.
