Your existing user account might not have permission accessing the /var/backups. Otherwise, you can use chown and chmod command to make /var/backups folder accessible by your account. share|improve this answer answered Sep 7 '14 at 17:42 teclinux 343 add a comment| Not the answer you're looking for? I have not altered any settings and the extrenal HDD is performing as normal. Unfortunately I always get the error message "permission denied". The data I want to backup error creating directory is sent over sftp to my server. The sftp connection works and the login info is correct. When I start deja-dup from the console with: sudo deja-dup --backup it works just fine. Ive tried to change the owner of the data with chown but unfortunately that did not solve my problem. I've heard that you can start deja-dup in debug mode like so: DEJA_DUP_DEBUG=1 deja-dup --backup That did not work for me because I didn't get any messages at all. Maybe I'm doing something wrong. I'm afraid I can't give you more information because Deja-Dup doesn't tell me more than that. I hope you can help me. backup ubuntu-16.04 share|improve this question asked Aug 2 at 8:58 user3025417 12 add a comment| active oldest votes Know someone who can answer?
