Solved export-mailbox unable to create destination folder Posted on 2009-12-08 Exchange 1 Verified Solution 6 Comments 2,399 Views Last Modified: 2012-05-08 I am trying to extract messages from multiple users' mailboxes which contain certain keywords in the subject and/or body for Legal Discovery purposes. In this case, the content found does not need to be deleted, but only extracted to a single target mailbox. To test, I created a new mailbox named "jwrecovery". Now I want to search my own mailbox (john.wheels) for any email that contains the word "Disneyland" and copy (not move) those emails to a folder named "MyData" on the jwrecovery mailbox. The scrip I am running is: >get-mailbox -Identity abcdomain\john.wheels | Export-Mailbox SubjectKeywords "Disneyland" TargetMailbox abcdomain\jwrecovery TargetFolder 'MyData' The script opens the source mailbox, but fails to open/create the destination folder. The error is " Error occurred in the step: Creating target folder in the target mailbox. An unknown error has occurred." The eventID is 1008. I am logging on the Exchange 2007 as domain/enterprise administrator to run the "get-mailbox" script below. >get-mailbox -Identity abcdomain\john.wheels | Export-Mailbox SubjectKeywords "Disneyland" TargetMailbox abcdomain\jwrecovery TargetFolder 'MyData' I have tried: 1) creating the "mydata" folder before running the script 2) opening up the permissions on "mydata" 3) running the script without the destination folder already created

That appears to be where the failure is happening and this is usually a permissions issue. You can use the Add-mailboxpermission command to give the proper rights. http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb266964.aspx

» Export Contacts folder to a PST in Exchange 2007 Is it possible to export items of a particular folder in the mailbox to a PST rather than having the entire mailbox exported? Yes, indeed. However, it cannot be directly exported to a PST. It can only be exported to another user mailbox that has full access of the mailbox. Scenario: User A would like to have an export of the contacts folder in User B's mailbox. This can be run from the server by following the steps below: Provide full permission to User A to access User B's mailbox: From the Exchange powershell, run the script below to provide full mailbox access to UserA on UserB's mailbox Add-MailboxPermission -Identity UserB -User UserA -AccessRights FullAccess Please note that UserA and UserB in the above command are aliases for the User mailboxes. The powershell window indicates the screen below: [PS] C:\Documents and Settings\admin>Add-MailboxPermission -Identity UserB -User UserA -AccessRights FullAccess Identity User AccessRights IsInherited Deny ----- --- -------- ------- --- Domain\User… Domain\UserA {FullAccess} False False Export the required folder to a specific folder in another user mailbox Once the required access has been provided, run the export mailbox command indicated below: Export-Mailbox -Identity UserB -IncludeFolders ‘\Contacts' -TargetFolder Backup -TargetMailbox UserA Please note that UserA and UserB in the above command are aliases for the User mailboxes. The parameter Contacts will exports contents from the Contents Folder in UserB's mailbox. This can be replaced with Inbox, Sent Items, Drafts, Calendar etc. The parameter Backup is
