Join Date Aug 2009 Beans 51 External Hard Drive won't format in Disk Utilities nor be recognized in GParted When I try to format my Simpletech 500GB hard drive in GParted, I get a partition table error. I tell GParted to make a new partition table and my hard drive disappears. In Disk Utilities when i try to format, I get this error 73722/37273723/37273724/37273725/37273726/3727done Creating journal (32768 blocks): done Writing superblocks and filesystem accounting information: done This filesystem will be automatically checked every 23 mounts or 180 days, whichever comes first. Use tune2fs -c or -i to override. and when i try to change the partition table i get this error Error creating partition table: helper exited with exit code 1: In part_create_partition_table: device_file=/dev/sdb, scheme=0 got it got disk Error: Input/output error during read on /dev/sdb ped_disk_commit_to_dev() failed Adv Reply March

That will wipe /deb/sdb, not /dev/sdc which is the required device! –Wilf Feb 18 '14 at 11:53 1 That dd command will wipe it as in it will WIPE IT - be careful... The command needed is likely to be sudo dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/sdc bs=1M count=40.
