Search on GeoNet Submit to ArcGIS Ideas Bug: Error: "No ArcSDE Server License Found" occurs when creating a new geodatabase with ArcSDE for SQL Server Express (Personal Edition) version 10.0 Description When making a connection to the SQL Server Express instance in ArcCatalog and attempting to create a new geodatabase, the following error is returned:"Error creating this geodatabaseNo ArcSDE server license found."This error occurs after installing ArcSDE for SQL Server Express (Personal Edition) that is included with the ArcGIS Desktop 10.0 installation media. Cause This is a known issue with the ArcGIS 10.0 installation of ArcSDE for SQL Server Express (Personal Edition). This error occurs when the software is installed from the setup link on the ArcGIS Desktop installation screen (ESRI.exe application), or by manually executing setup.exe in the ArcSDE_Personal folder. Workaround Option 1Esri recommends using this repair utility.1. Download and run NIM058807_Repair. 2. When this utility opens, select the appropriate instance of SQL Server Express and click OK. A valid license key that correctly authorizes the installation is written to the registry. It is now possible to create a new geodatabase using the Database Server connection in ArcCatalog.Option 2Instead of installing from the ESRI.exe application or setup.exe in the ArcSDE_Personal folder, install using the ArcSDESetupSqlExpressPersonal.exe in either the 32-bit or 64-bit folder, depending on whether a 32-bit or 64-bit operating system is being used.Determine if a 32-bit or 64-bit machine is being used and open the appropriate folder under ArcSDE_Personal. Find and run the ArcSDESetupSqlExpressPersonal.exe. When the installation wizard opens, uncheck Microsoft SQL Server Express Edition if SQL Server is already installed. Leave the option 'Enable geodatabase storage on SQL Server Express' checked and click Next. Select the existing SQL Server Express instance from the drop-down menu and enter the Windows Login, if required. Click Next. Click Finish. Thi

Do you have SDE installed anywhere? What license level do you have? Open up the Desktop Administrator and check. –Jamie Oct 11 '11 at 3:13 yes . You must have used either Oracle, MS SQL Server, PostgreSQL, Informix or DB2. If you can let us know this and whether ArcSDE Enterprise, Workgroup or Personal has been installed, we may be able to help you with suggestions on how to create a new geodatabase. –Thomas Oct 12 '11 at 9:25 I have installed sql server. Upgrade an enterprise geodatabase in SQL Server Available with Standard or Advanced license. Before you upgradeUpgrade the geodatabase The goal of upgrading an enterprise geodatabase is to update the geodatabase system tables, stored procedures, types, and functions to take advantage of new functionality and bug fixes.Install a new version of the ArcGIS client or apply a service pack, patch, or hot fix to an existing installation and upgrade the geodatabase. Before you upgradeWhen you upgrade any enterprise system, including a geodatabase, plan ahead. Test the new version on a development or test server to ensure that it works with all your client applications. When you have determined that the new system works the way you expected, schedule the upgrade; be sure the necessary staff are available to perform the upgrade and that they have the permissions necessary to complete their assigned tasks.Be aware of the following:ArcSDE application server for SQL Server is no longer available beginning with ArcGIS 10.3. You must migrate all application server connections used in maps or services to use direct connections before you can upgrade your geodatabase to 10.3.Upgrades from beta versions of the software are not supported. You can upgrade directly from a 9.3.1, 10, 10.1, 10.2, 10.2.1, or 10.2.2 geodatabase to a 10.3 geodatabase if your database is at a supported release. If your geodatabase is at release 9.3 or earlier, you must first upgrade to a supported geodatabase release and then upgrade to 10.3. Once a geodatabase has been upgraded, previous versions of ArcGIS may not be able to connect since some older versions of ArcGIS cannot read newer versions of the geodatabase. Releases prior to ArcGIS 10 will not be able to connect to a 10.3 geodatabase. ArcGIS 10 clients will be able to connect to the 10.3 geodatabase. There is no formal mechanism to downgrade a geodatabase to a previous version. If after upgrading to a newer version you want to move back to an older version of the geodatabase, you must restore the old database from backup. When a geodatabase in SQL Server is upgraded from ArcGIS 10 to ArcGIS 10.1 or later releases, newly created feature classes will use the SQL Server geometry storage type by de
