Tried numerous times with; Battery out, Battery in, Swapped ram, Swapped hdd, cleared bios/cmos, etc. I'm at a loose end with an error message: "The recovery attempt has failed." All help much appreciated. The 6GB/S Hitachi will nevet take advantage of the speed of the interface due to physical limitations. A physical 5400 or 7200 RPM hard drive just can't read/write that fast. You would not notice a difference with either one. For Linux, I'd get Windows sorted out first. Then mess with Linux. If you ultimately decide to have that laptop dual boot to both Windows and linux, you'll need to have Windows installed on the drive first anyway.
