Solved PCL XL Error - IllegalTag message received when trying to print Posted error illegal on 2003-10-15 Printers and Scanners 1 Verified Solution 5 Comments 75,606 Views Last Modified: 2013-12-15 We have a user attempting to print to a networked HP LJ 4050tn printer on an NT4.0 network. When she sends a print job to the printer it prints an error page stating that there is a PCL XL error in the KERNEL subsystem, the error being pcl xl error "IllegalTag". We have a number of users printing to this machine but only the one person receiving this error message as such I am wondering if this is something on her local machine settings, but if so I am not sure what. Please advise how best to proceed to resolve this issue. Any ideas? PCL XL error Subsystem: KERNEL Error: IllegalTag Operator: 0xa2 Position: 3 printing hp share|improve this question asked May 15 '09 at 19:51 Matt Hanson 1,32411932 add a comment| 3 Answers 3 active oldest votes up vote 3 down vote accepted Using PCL 6 XL (Enhanced) printer drivers, PCL XL error pages usually indicate a communication problem. The error can also be caused by an incompatibility between the Enhanced XL language and the software application that is associated with the file being printed, Adobe Photoshop Album in your case. The procedure in this HP support document for a different Laserjet model should help determining the source of the problem. In most cases the PCL5e drivers are recommended over PCL6 drivers. They work just as well and won't throw such errors. PCL 6 XL is less forgiving of slight glitches in the printer driver or software. PCL5e has been around longer and is considered more stable. share|improve this answer edited May 16 '09 at 11:16 answered May 15 '09 at 20:28 splattne 23.8k1686138 Thanks for the explanation. Upgraded to the latest version of the drivers and the problem seems to be resolved... for now anyways. :) –Matt Hanso
