Details Product LanguageEnglishVersionSQL Server 2005 - Developer EditionCategorySQL EngineOperating SystemWindows XP SP2 ProfessionalOperating System LanguageUS EnglishSteps to ReproduceI actually used XP Pro SP3, but that wasn't an option in the drop-down. 1. Create a directory called "projects" on your root drive. (e.g. c:\projects).2. Substitute that drive to the z: drive from the command line with the following command "subst z: c:\projects"3. Install the KB948109 security update using the Windows Update method.Actual ResultsThe install fails with the following error from the event log:Installation Failure: Windows failed to install the following update with error 0x80070643: Security Update for SQL Server 2005 Service Pack 2 (KB948109).Log File errors:07/09/2008 09:21:04.546 Copy Engine: Error, unable to install MSP file: z:\15b1dadbc2254f4a35986553ec7a\HotFixTools\Files\sqlrun_tools.msp07/09/2008 09:21:04.546 The following exception occurred: Unable to install Windows Installer MSP file Date: 07/09/2008 09:21:04.546 File: \depot\sqlvault\stable\setupmainl1\setup\sqlse\sqlsedll\copyengine.cpp Line: 807Expected ResultsI expect the installation to not fail. There is a work-around, and that is to delete the drive substitution and then put it back after the installation is completed. Posted by Microsoft on 3/10/2009 at 12:28 PM At this point, we have decided not to address this issue as it is not very common. Thanks,Peter Saddow [Microsoft] Posted by Frank Rundatz on 8/14/2008 at 9:02 AM Had exact same problem as original poster. Searched web for various solutions, none of them applied.I had a drive (v:) substituted from a location on my c: drive using the subst.exe program as per below:C:\WINDOWS>substV:\: => C:\vaultI deleted the v: drive using subst.exe:C:\WINDOWS>subst /d v:I then re-ran the hotfix and it installed with no problems. Placing the substituted drive back appeared to cause no further problems. Posted by Quesi Jay on 7/28/2008 at 11:20 AM Peter,Have you tried the steps I provided to recreate this issue? I can reproduce this at will by having a substituted drive. This also happened with the last SQL Server hotfix. Posted by Microsoft on 7/28/2
