I've manually downloaded all the related gem packages and copied them to the linux box. When I try to install some of those packages, I got error. e.g., : [jw@web gems]$ sudo /usr/local/bin/gem install --local ./activemodel-3.2.8.gem ERROR: While executing gem ... http://stackoverflow.com/questions/12491177/gem-1-8-23-install-rails-3-2-8-failed-unable-to-resolve-dependencies (Gem::DependencyError) Unable to resolve dependencies: activemodel requires builder (~> 3.0.0) The strange thing is that some packages can be installed this way. e.g., the builder has already been installed. Please note that all the dependencies required are there. How come the dependencies is unable to resolve ? You see rails requires gem builder ~> 3.0.0, but you have 3.1.3 which does not match (~> means it will match 3.0.x, but not 3.1.x). You have to install builder 3.0.3.

RubyGems can be updated using the official Debian repositories by aptitude or apt-get. –Anuj Nov 30 '12 at 9:18 1 Here because of problems with unicode gem (github.com/blackwinter/unicode/issues/5): after having run answer's solution I had to run gem pristine unicode which re-built the gem and made it usable. –reallynice Jan 8 '14 at 10:43 Works greate to update the rubygems on Debian system. Thanks! –danger89 Jul 9 '14 at 9:31 1 Thanks, it helped me to install minitest on an NFS partition cf. github.com/rubygems/rubygems/issues/1161 –Oncle T
Bundler's Purpose and Rationale First, you declare these dependencies in a file at the root of your application, called Gemfile. It looks something like this: source 'https://rubygems.org' gem 'rails', '4.1.0.rc2' gem 'rack-cache' gem 'nokogiri', '~> 1.6.1' This Gemfile says a few things. First, it says that bundler should look for gems declared in the Gemfile at https://rubygems.org by default. If some of your gems need to be fetched from a private gem server, this default source can be overridden for those gems. Next, you declare a few dependencies: on version 4.1.0.rc2 of rails on any version of rack-cache on a version of nokogiri that is >= 1.6.1 but < 1.7.0 After declaring your first set of dependencies, you tell bundler to go get them: $ bundle install # 'bundle' is a shortcut for 'bundle install' Bundler will connect to rubygems.org (and any other sources that you declared), and find a list of all of the required gems that meet the requirements you specified. Because all of the gems in your Gemfile have dependencies of their own (and some of those have their own dependencies), running bundle install on the Gemfile above will install quite a few gems. $ bundle install Fetching gem metadata from https://rubygems.org/.........
