takes a minute: Sign up Can't install ruby-debug-ide on Windows 7 up vote 0 down vote favorite 2 I'm running netbeans 6.8 on windows 7 pro (x64) with the bitnami stack and I'm using ruby 1.8.7-p72. Note: I can't change the version of ruby I am using because I am working with a team, this is a college project and we gem ruby-debug-ide have only 3 weeks left before we have to hand it in. Changing the version of ruby at this time would be too much work I think. I can't debug my code with the IDE. It says I must have the fast-debugger installed but I cannot install it. When I try through the gui I get the following message: Building native extensions. This could take a while... ERROR: Error installing ruby-debug-ide: ERROR: Failed to build gem native extension. "C:/Program Files/BitNami RubyStack/ruby/bin/ruby.exe" mkrf_conf.rb Building native extensions. This could take a while... Gem files will remain installed in C:/Program Files/BitNami RubyStack/ruby/lib/ruby/gems/1.8/gems/ruby-debug-ide-0.4.8 for inspection. Results logged to C:/Program Files/BitNami RubyStack/ruby/lib/ruby/gems/1.8/gems/ruby-debug-ide-0.4.8/ext/gem_make.out I have tracked the problem down to a gcc not being installed... I have installed cygwin but I'm not sure what I am doing and it's still not working... Anyone know how to fix this problem? (BTW- I have already done a lot of googling on this) ruby-on-rails netbeans windows-7 share|improve this question edited Apr 24 '10 at 7:55 Donal Fellows 82.5k1193156 asked Apr 13 '10 at 0:07 Jack Allan 5,89452336 rubytip

also work for anyone using Vista, which I know from experience has similar issues. First step: make sure the Ruby DevKit is installed. Full instructions for installing it are here on Github: https://github.com/oneclick/rubyinstaller/wiki/Development-Kit. The DevKit basically temporarily enhances Windows and allows tricky Gems to be compiled. Second step: Next you must install the correct debug Gems. If your Ruby version is 1.9.2+ then you will require the gems ending with a "19". The way to make the gems install successfully is through Netbeans. Go to Tools > Ruby Gems > New Gems. Do a search for "ruby-debug" and you shall see a list similar to this: Install the "latest" version of all of the Gems which I have highlighted. Do not try and install "ruby-debug". Third step: Once the Gems have installed, open up and new Command Prompt, run the command "gem list" and check that all of the Gems are listed, if not try to install them manually. Next, the "rdebug-ide" file must be edited. Find this by browsing to (or similar): C:\Ruby192\lib\ruby\gems\1.9.1\gems\ruby-debug-ide19-0.4.12\bin Find the line (around 79): Debugger::PROG_SCRIPT = ARGV.shift Replace it with: script = ARGV.shift Debugger::PROG_SCRIPT = (script =~ /script([\\\/])rails/ ? Dir.pwd + $1 : '') + script puts Debugger::PROG_SCRIPT #Debugger::PROG_SCRIPT = ARGV.shift Final step: Save the file and restart your computer. When Netbeans is reopened, click the "Debug main project" button to start the server in debug mode.
