a duplicate name exists on the network" (system error 52)These errors will all prevent a Windows computer from joining the network. The device will start up and function in an offline (disconnected) mode only. Why Duplicate Name Issues Occur on WindowsThese errors are found only on networks which have old Windows XP PCs or are using Windows Server 2003. Windows clients display "A duplicate name exists on the network" when they detect two duplicate file name error itunes devices with the same network name. This error can be triggered in several ways:(most commonly) two Windows computers were given the same name Computer Name under Windows System Propertiesthe local network has been set up to use a Windows Workgroup, and the name chosen for the workgroup is the same as the name of some other device on the network (such as a home broadband routers continue reading below our video How to Speed up Your Home Wifi (least commonly) a Windows server on the network has been configured with two different network namesNote that the computer on which these errors are reported is not necessarily one of the devices having a duplicate name. Microsoft Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 operating systems use NetBIOS and the Windows Internet Naming Service (WINS) system to maintain a shared database of all the network names. In the worst case, any and every NetBIOS device on the network might report these same errors. (Think of it as a a neighborhood watch where devices are noticing a problem down the street. Unfortunately, the Windows error messages do not say exactly which neighbor devices are having the name dispute.)Resolving Duplicate Name Exists ErrorsTo resolve these errors on a Windows network, follow these steps:If the network is using a Windows workgroup, ensure

only with older versions of Windows like Windows XP, Windows 2000, Windows 98, etc. that rely on NETBIOS and WINS where you will run into issues. In the second case, you might end up seeing a message like the http://compnetworking.about.com/od/windowsnetworking/f/duplicate_name.htm following: Duplicate name exists on the network At first, you might think the obvious answer is to just rename one of the computers, right? Well, you may also get this error even if no two computers on the network have the same name! The problem could be caused by an old network adapter that is no longer present on the system. Here are a couple of ways you can try to solve this issue before renaming computers. Method 1 http://www.online-tech-tips.com/computer-tips/duplicate-name-exists-on-the-network-windows-error/ – IPCONFIG Firstly, a simple release and renew of the IP address might solve your problem. Go to Start, then Run and type in CMD. At the command prompt, go ahead and type in ipconfig /release ipconfig /renew If you still get the error, then move on to the following possible solutions. Method 2 – Remove Hidden Network Adapters Go to Start, Run, and type in DEVMGMT.MSC in the box. Now in Device Manager, click on View and choose Show Hidden Devices. Now scroll down to Network Adapters and uninstall any that are showing with transparent icons. If nothing is grayed out, then your problem is also not with an old network adapter. Method 3 – Rename computer If neither of these two methods worked, then you will probably just have to rename the computer. This can occur for one of two reasons: You actually have two machines on the network with the same NETBIOS name One of the computers has the same name as the name of the workgroup You can go to Start, run, type in CMD, and then type in nbtstat –n at the command prompt and it’ll show you a conflicting workstation if there is one. Make sure to look at the one for network connection you are currently using, i.e. Local Area Connection or Wireless Network Connection. You can rename a computer by right-

Some other machine on the network is already using the name, and the newly started machine (VM) refused to use the same name. You need to change your VM's network name from vdev to something else. This is a Windows networking problem, it has nothing to do with VirtualBox. It's very easy to get into this situation when cloning machines (physical or virtual). comment:3 Changed 7 years ago by xok I undestand what you are saying but you are wrong, this behaviour started to happen on the VirtualBox version 2.2.2.
