Classic Asp Turn On Error Messages
in Web Browser by Default By Robert McMurrayFebruary 19, 2009In earlier versions of IIS, error messages from classic ASP scripts were sent to a Web browser, by default. Because these error asp error message display messages might reveal sensitive information to malicious users, IIS 7 and above disables this feature by default. When your classic ASP scripts encounter an error in IIS, you receive the following error message by default: An error occurred on the server when processing the URL. Please contact the system administrator. If you are the system administrator please click here to find out iis detailed error messages more about this error. You can customize the ASP script error message, and also determine whether to return the script errors to a Web browser. Note: As a best practice for security, you should only enable sending ASP script error messages to a Web browser on a development or test computer; returning script error messages to a Web browser can unintentionally expose more information than you intended to show. Working with User Access Control You need to make sure that you follow the steps in this document by using an account that has full administrative permissions. This is best accomplished by using one of two methods: Log in to your computer by using the local administrator account. If you are logged in using an account with administrative permissions but that is not the local administrator account, open all applications and all command prompt sessions by using the "Run as Administrator" option. These above conditions are required because the User Account Control (UAC) security component in Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008 will prevent administrative access to the IIS configuration settings. So if "Send Errors To Browser" is not working set also this: Error Pages -> 500 -> Edit Feature Settings -> "Detailed Errors" Also note that if the content of the error page sent back is quite short and you're using IE, IE will happily ignore the useful content sent back by the server and show you its own generic error page instead. You can turn this off in IE's options, or use a different browser. share|improve this answer edited Jan 21 '14 at 15:03 answered May 4 '10 at 13:43 Vaclav Elias 2,48621122 8 Error Pages -> 500 -> Edit Feature Settings -> "Detailed Error" Thanks!!!!! –Pablo Martinez May 11 '12 at 12:55 6 If it's still not working, disable friendly http error messages –Tim Partridge Feb 22 '13 at 18:53 If "Error Pages" is missing from your panel, ensure the feature is enabled: Turn Windows features on or off => WWW Services, Common HTTP Features, [x] HTTP Errors –fiat Feb 7 '14 at 3:53 @fiat To enable "Error Pages", I had to go: Turn Windows features on or off > Internet Information Services > World Wide Web Services > Common HTTP Features > [✓] HTTP Errors. –Jess Telford Nov 10 '15 at 23:09 Note: "Error Pages" and ".NET Error Pages" are different.
are essential during the development and debugging stages. The error messages can be switched on through IIS properties but they require two adjustments. Part of the IIS property screen is shown below and the two sections that need changes are highlighted, ASP and Error Pages. First, double click the ASP icon to open the ASP page. Expand the Debugging Properties node and set Send Errors To Browser to True. This is not enough to get a detailed error message. At this stage it will only show the error defined by Script Error Message. Go back to the IIS properties as shown above and open the section for Error Pages. Select the link marked Edit Feature Settings from the list on the right and this opens the following dialogue. If you are viewing the pages with the server's own browser, you can select the bottom radio button as shown. This is the recommended selection for a live website because it will send custom error pages to an end user. Customer error pages are configured at the previous screen. If you are developing on a different computer you must set the radio button to Detailed Errors. This will send the full error message with an error code and line number. This is not advisable for a live website and the radio button should be changed back when debugging is complete. Making errors display in Internet Explorer Internet Explorer does not show proper error messages by default. To switch them on, go into Internet Options and find the checkbox marked "Show friendly HTTP error messages" which is located under the Advanced tab and Browsing.
