I don't http://stackoverflow.com/questions/2818219/asp-net-mvc-html-validationsummarytrue-does-not-display-model-errors want to display property errors in ValidationSummary. And when I set Html.ValidationSummary(true) it does not display error messages from ModelState. When there is some Exception in controller action on string MembersManager.RegisterMember(member); catch section adds an error to the ModelState: ModelState.AddModelError("error", ex.Message); But ValidationSummary does not display this error message. When I set Html.ValidationSummary(false) all messages are displaying, but I don't want to display property errors. How can I fix this problem? Here is the code I'm using: Model: public class Member { [Required(ErrorMessage = "*")] [DisplayName("Login:")] public string Login { get; set; } [Required(ErrorMessage = "*")] [DataType(DataType.Password)] [DisplayName("Password:")] public string Password { get; set; } [Required(ErrorMessage = "*")] [DataType(DataType.Password)] [DisplayName("Confirm Password:")] public string ConfirmPassword { get; set; } } Controller: [HttpPost] public ActionResult Register(Member member) { try { if (!ModelState.IsValid) return View(); MembersManager.RegisterMember(member); } catch (Exception ex) { ModelState.AddModelError("error", ex.Message); return View(member); } } View: <% using (Html.Be

This will hide the validation text for the individual validation controls. Then give them all a validation group linked to a ValidationSummary share|improve this answer answered Jul 5 '11 at 8:46 Curt 62.1k37182282 add a comment| up vote 2 down vote An alternative solution is to use both ErrorMessage and Text properties of the Validator controls. Give your Validator controls, post back controls (Buttons, posting Dropdowns etc.) and ValidationSummary control the same ValidationGroup value. Set * on Text property for your Validators. Set the value you want to display on ValidationSummary for each of your Validators to ErrorMessage property. This way you will have your validation descriptions (ErrorMessage) displayed at ValidationSummary control and a * (Text) displayed next to controls that failed validation. share|improve this answer answered Jul 5 '11 at 9:07 Yiğit Yener 4,2151221 It's useful to point out the difference between Text and ErrorMessage but the problem with this solution in this case is that you can't set the Text property to an empty string (or even a space) as it just uses the ErrorMessage property if you do. You can do as you suggest and set it to something like * but you can't hide it completely –davesol May 9 at 15
