RE: Error on required field if left blank missinglinq (Programmer) 12 Apr 08 06:12 You have two problems, as I see it:Since you're getting the standard Access message, I assume you have the field defined as required in the table definition. By doing that and doing validation in the form, you're essentially making it "required" twice! The simplest solution would be to go into you table design view and change the R

Add custom error handling to my Access forms and reports? When capturing and handling errors, you probably think of access required field the Err object, which stores information about the current run-time error. If a form or report encounters an error, you'll find the information you need in an event — the object's Error event to be exact. By default, Access handles action errors without any help from you. On occasion, you might find you want a little more control. When that's the case, take matters into your own hands by usurping the object's Error event. About the Error event Both forms and reports sometimes generate action errors, such as trying to delete a record protected by referential integrity or trying to add a new record without filling in required fields. When this happens, Access displays a predefined warning message that's usually adequate. But if you prefer, you can take charge of the event and force it to do the following: Inhibit the internal message Display a custom message Redirect the application's flow Using the Error event A common form error occurs when you try to save a new record without filling in all required fields (required at the tab
Ask a Question Need help? Post your question and get tips & solutions from a community of 418,595 IT Pros & Developers. It's quick & easy. Can I change the text for the required property warning? P: 9 Andy Sauer Hello. I have a database in Access 2002. I have a table where the field "Name" is set as a required field. I have a form that populates that table. When somebody forgets to fill in the Name and they attempt to proceed forward, they receive this message: "The field 'Name' cannot contain a Null value because the required property for this field is set to True. Enter a value in this field." Can I change the text of this message? I would like to change it to be a little more user friendly. I know I can use the code below to write my own message. However, I have found people are still able to move ahead without filling in name by clicking on the little forward arrow at the bottom of the form or by using the mouse wheel. I'm not sure why they do this...but they sometimes do. By making the field required in the table itself, people cannot proceed without filling in Name no matter what. So, my ideal would be to change the default message itself. Thanks for your time and ideas. I have tried this, but people can still bypass it: Expand|Select|Wrap|Line Numbers PrivateSubSave_Record_Button_Click() OnErrorGoToErr_Save_Record_Button_Click IfIsNull(Me![Name])Then MsgBox"YouneedtoinputaNameinordertoproceed",vbCritical,_ "MissingRequiredData" ExitSub Apr 20 '11 #1 Post Reply Share this Question 1 Reply P: 9 Andy Sauer Great article at: http://bytes.com/topic/visual-basic/...essages-access The only thing is I had to make a slight change in the code. The code I used was: Expand|Select|Wrap|Line Numbers PrivateSubForm_Error(DataErrAsInteger,ResponseAsInteger) IfDataErr=3314Then MsgBox"YouaremissingaName." Response=acDataErrContinue Else MsgBox"ErrorNo.:"&DataErr EndIf EndSub Error 3314 was the original message, and I am replacing it with my own message. I found out 3314 was the error number by clicking on the Help button when the error appeared. In the Help window, it states the error number. As the article states, you can use this code to change any error. Thanks to hyperpau for the great information.
