and sent a request. Web application responded by displaying a yellow message box with an exclamation icon saying that css error message display data processing is still in progress. He checked several more times, css error message animation but he didn't notice that at one moment the message changed to "Account available". But the message box

hasn't changed. He continued to check a few more times and eventually he realized that the request was successful. I don't know what was in the minds of developers and http://www.colourlovers.com/color/FF9494/error_red designers who created this application, but it certainly wasn't the user. This poor bank official was really frustrated. I can't imagine what the rest of the application looks like. To prevent this, different message types should be displayed differently. My opinion is that every web application should handle four main message types: information, successful operation, warning and error. Each message http://www.jankoatwarpspeed.com/css-message-boxes-for-different-message-types/ type should be presented in a different color and different icon. A special message type represents validation messages. I will show you a remake of CSS message boxes I used on my latest project. I changed them slightly just to make them simpler for this example. In next article, you will see how to create ASP.NET user control that can support different message types and how to style it using CSS. You will also see how to style ValidationSummary in a similar way. Let's first take a quick look at message types. 1. Information messages The purpose of information messages is to inform the user about something relevant. This should be presented in blue because people associate this color with information, regardless of content. This could be any information relevant to a user action. For example, info message can show some help information regarding current user action or some tips. 2. Success messages Success messages should be displayed after user successfully performs an operation. By that I mean a complete operation - no partial operations and

In the case of serious system errors, I agree. However, I'm having doubts that it's the right choice for user generated errors, like form validation. It's common to see something like this: To me, this feels equivalent to blaming or yelling at the user. I've considered something like this instead: It feels like a message with a gentler tone even though the error message css words are the same. My opinion: Users don't need to feel like they caused an "error", and forms are already annoying enough as it is, especially when you've made a mistake or two (because after all, the user isn't trying to pass in an invalid email on purpose). It's just a small, correctable mistake - not a show-stopper. System errors are a different thing: they aren't necessarily the user's fault, and they can really mean that something is broken or out of the user's control. Is there any reason why user generated errors should (or should not) be red? * Note: I'm concerned about the colors, not necessarily the message text or icons. forms color feedback error-message share|improve this question asked Jan 19 '12 at 16:10 Wesley Murch 95031018 1 I agree with you, basically - not sure if anything can be added to this to give you an 'answer'. –Anonymous Jan 19 '12 at 16:14 Have I assumed too much about "red" being the standard, or am I just being naive? I pretty much never see any deviation from it. Even on this site, validation errors are red: i.stack.imgur.com/2K4yA.png (I also find the "oops" very annoying, but that's another topic). –Wesley Murch Jan 19 '12 at 16:20 No, I think your assumptions are valid. I do recall seeing yellow/more neutral colours being used for validation errors on other sites (co

The scenario This is what I have now: Borders/font color: #e84e4f Alert background-color: #9c2b2e Body background color: #d2cece The problem I don't know... I just think that colors aren't good enough for the scenario. Of course, it depends of my context, but I think the reds are too heavy, painful and shocking for humans' eyes - don't you think the same? I need some other harmonious color to indicate validation errors that fits well the background. I'd leave the border as-is, and look for a pink in the family of the red background to use with the text. White may bleed too much (make the text look fatter and reduce readability), so experimentation is good. Per IronBasset, goal is to increase contrast. –Matt Jan 27 '14 at 16:51 Why would this be moved from user experience? If this isn't a UX question then why is that site around? –leigero May 6 '14 at 0:54 add a comment| 7 Answers 7 active oldest votes up vote 16 down vote accepted I think all you need to do is change your text color to White: share|improve this answer answered Jan 27 '14 at 17:56 Code Maverick 27626 2 +1 for simple elegance.
