17 May 2005] In this article we will cover the basic steps on how to remove error reporting features on Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 systems. Error reporting is when your system attempts to connect to Microsoft’s website to http://www.windowsnetworking.com/articles-tutorials/windows-2003/Disable-Error-Reporting-Windows-XP-Server-2003.html send a report of the problem you are experiencing in hopes to help fix it by documenting it. You may have systems where you want to turn off this functionality for reasons of annoyance or functionality. This article shows https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_Error_Reporting you step by step how to turn off this feature. For a complete guide to security, check out 'Security+ Study Guide and DVD Training System' from Amazon.com Turning off Error Reporting Many folks I meet who use XP or error report 2003 constantly tell me how annoying it is to see that error reporting dialog box spring up when their Windows system seemed to be having problems. It is actually very easy to remove from view completely, never to be seen again. You can also re-enable it very quickly if you do want to use it. This article covers error reporting, how to disable it, modify it or re-enable it. Error Reporting is easy to enable or disable. It can error reporting windows be found by going to your System Properties. This can be found by going to your System applet in the Control panel or by hitting your Windows Key on your keyboard and holding it down, then selecting the Pause/Break button simultaneously. This will open your System Properties as well. You want to view the Advanced tab. On the bottom you can see the ‘Error Reporting’ button. This will open the Error Reporting Dialog box. As you can see from my system, it is already disabled, but I can also specify that I still would like to be notified regardless if a critical error occurs. Yes, you can probably set this to ‘out of sight out of mind’, but I highly suggest against that unless you constantly check your error logs. You can enable, disable, or modify the way that error reporting works on a Windows XP-based computer. When an error occurs, a dialog box is displayed that prompts you to report the problem to Microsoft. If you want to report the problem, technical information about the problem is sent to Microsoft over the Internet, that’s it. If you are not connected to the Internet, then nothing is sent. Enable Error Reporting By default Error Reporting is enabled. Since I showed you how to disable it already, let’s look at how to re-enable it and modify it. To enable and configure the error reporting feature, sim
reporting technology introduced by Microsoft with WindowsXP[1] and included in later Windows versions and Windows Mobile 5.0 and 6.0. Not to be confused with the Dr. Watson debugging tool which left the memory dump on the user's local machine, Windows Error Reporting collects and offers to send post-error debug information (a memory dump) using the Internet to the Microsoft or stops responding on a user's desktop. No data is sent without the user's consent.[2] When a dump (or other error signature information) reaches the Microsoft server, it is analyzed and a solution is sent back to the user when one is available. Solutions are served using Windows Error Reporting Responses. Windows Error Reporting runs as a Windows service and can optionally be entirely disabled. If Windows Error Reporting itself crashes, then an error report that the original crashed process produced cannot be sent at all. Kinshuman is the original designer of Windows Error Reporting in Vista which is the same design and implementation that is present in current Windows versions. Most importantly a new set of public APIs have been created for reporting failures other than application crashes and hangs.[4] Developers can create custom reports and customize the reporting user interface. The new APIs are documented in MSDN. The architecture of Windows Error Reporting has been revamped with a focus on reliability and user experience. WER can now report errors even when the process is in a very bad state for example if the process has encountered stack exhaustions, PEB/TEB corruptions, heap corruptions, etc. In earlier OSs prior to WindowsVista, the process usually terminated silently without generating an error report in these conditions. A new Control Panel applet, "Problem Reports and Solutions" was also introduced, keeping a record of system and application errors and issues, as well as presenting probable solutions to problems. Windows 7[edit] The Problem Reports and Solutions Control Panel applet was replaced by the Maintenance section
