Quite often I will try and run the script and just get a blank screen back. No error message, just empty screen. The cause might have been a simple syntax error (wrong bracket, missing semicolon), or a failed function call, or something else entirely. It is very difficult to figure out what went wrong. I end up commenting out code, entering "echo" statements everywhere, etc. trying to narrow down the problem. http://stackoverflow.com/questions/845021/how-to-get-useful-error-messages-in-php But there surely must be a better way, right?. So, is there a way to get PHP to produce useful error message like Java does? And when you finally see the errors, it says T_PAAMAYIM_NEKUDOTAYIM. Or maybe "must be an instance of integer, integer given". –Pacerier Apr 3 '15 at 20:02 Tutorial on this: code2real.blogspot.com/2015/06/… –Pupil Sep 9 '15 at 7:21 add a comment| 27 Answers 27 active oldest votes up vote 355 down vote accepted For syntax errors, you need to enable error display in the php.ini. By default these are turned off because you don't want a "customer" seeing the error messages. Check this page in the PHP documentation for information on the 2 directives: error_reporting and display_errors. display_errors is probably the one you want to change. If you can't modify the php.ini, you can also add the following lines to an .htaccess file: php_flag display_errors on php_value error_reporting 2039 You may want to consider

If you're using XAMPP just select "restart" in the manager app. –Mateusz Stawecki Apr 9 '15 at 13:54 1 I suggest running grep display_errors /path/to/php.ini to see if your line is getting overrided somewhere down the file. This is what was happening to me. –usandfriends Aug 21 '15 at 18:02 add a comment| 11 Answers 11 active oldest votes up vote 47 down vote accepted You can set display_errors to 0 or use the error_reporting() function. However, notices are annoying (I can partly sympathize) but they serve a purpose. You shouldn't be defining a constant twice, the second time won't work and the constant will remain unchanged! share|improve this answer answered May 19 '10 at 15:43 Pekka 웃 304k93700914 2 +1: I approve of mentioning that he should correct
