Windows Could Not Start The Windows Event Log Service On Local Computer Error 3
was not recognized as valid by a WMI data provider. Windows 7 IT Pro > windows could not start the windows event log service on local computer access is denied Windows 7 Security Question 0 Sign in to vote Got the Error code: 4201 when attempting to start the Windows Event Log.I am almost certain that http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_7-performance/cannot-start-windows-event-log-service-on-windows/e2c218ad-8637-49ee-8023-50eae0e4ddcb it has something to do with me changing ownership in the C:\ directory so that I could access C:\Documents\User\SendTo folder. Saturday, May 09, 2009 2:40 AM Reply | Quote Answers 0 Sign in to vote I figured it out.I didn't have the Permissions or the Auditing set correctly. All I have installed is Win 7 x64, the regular Windows Updates and some other recommended updates (drivers for my VGA, NIC, HID, TV tuner...I think that's it). All were done via the Windows Update program.I don't think it was any of the many settings that I made via the MMC/Local Computer Policy. Most of the changes were for Internet Explorer. Made some minor settings for Windows Explorer, Windows Installer, Windows Messenger, etc...Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Saturday, May 09, 2009 4:49 AM Reply | Q

When starting use Net Start, I get Access is Denied. This is a pseudo/almost production server. It was running Server 2008 Enterprise, after getting the errors, I event log thought that upgrading to R2 might fix the problem. It has not fixed the problem. I've changed the ACL's for the event log directories for everybody having full permissions. Nothing. There is very little on the internet about this error, and what's there mostly pertain's to Vista. Usually about ACL's. This would be consistant with what error comes up with net start. But to mydismay, nothing has worked (including monkeying event log service with ACL's) And unfortunately, with no event log to help troubleshoot, it's a Catch-22. It's really making changes in the dark. Any ideas???? It's now giving the same error message as starting through the GUI, #4201 BeakerOfSolace Members Profile Send Private Message Find Members Posts Add to Buddy List Senior Member Joined: 15 March 2010 Status: Offline Points: 336 Post Options Post Reply QuoteBeakerOfSolace Report Post Thanks(0) QuoteReply Posted: 01 June 2010 at 1:25am if you have a backup (or not depending on how much you care about getting things back to the way they are :) ) -delete (maybe used Sysinternals movefile) the folder C:\Windows\System32\L
20 Oct, 2014 at 12:51 PM while trying to troubleshoot printing issues on a machine, the event logs weren't available. Trying to start them gave a "service error 4201 the instance name passed was not recognized as valid by a WMI data provider". I found the following articles helpful in resolving the problem - basically granting the SYSTEM account full control to the %systemroot%\system32\LogFiles\WMI\RtBackup folder. A couple of months ago, one of the techs tried changing the permissions on the C: drive to fix a problem - I believe that caused this problem. http://www.winhelponline.com/blog/fix-event-log-error-4201-instance-name-not-recognized/ http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/windowsdesktop/en-US/c75ae899-d05b-411d-a7f2-00fdd33b8589/event-log-error-4201-errorwmiinstancenotfound http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/windows/en-US/95987ca3-a1b2-4da6-95b7-d825d06cdac7/error-code-4201-the-instance-name-passed-was-not-recognized-as-valid-by-a-wmi-data-provider Did you find it helpful?
