EDIT: I remember I was using this utilty in Windows XP Professional and the event log id name was event"somethings" (for sure not eventvwr.msc or eventcreate.exe...) Some places to find some of that information that I know of are : Microsoft Events and Errors Windows Security Log Events The website eventid.net bills itself as having the best database for events ids. You might be able to find more information from their search pages, but that required paying for a subscription (beware of auto-renewing subscriptions). share|improve this answer answered Mar 6 '12 at 19:14 harrymc 190k7166406 1 Plus, you can add your own event ids. –surfasb Mar 8 '12 at 14:44 > Plus, you can add your own event ids. Just ensure you document what you have used and where so that you can ensure you don't use an id twice, or to facilitate easier debugging. But keep in mind... Like when Henry Ford said "you can have any color you want as long as it's black" - you can also use whatever range you like as long as that range falls inside the range of 0 and 65535. share|improve this answer edited Jul 10 '14 at 18:49 Community♦ 11 answered Nov 18 '09 at 12:37 Martin 21.7k1372114 where 65535 is ushort.MaxValue –Junior M Feb 2 '15 at 17:19 add a comment| up vote 4 down vote Sure enough, it is up to the author to define and track event IDs they use and what they mean. Here is a reference: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/e29k5ebc.aspx - Particularly interesting is the part about not writing messages with IPv6 addresses (because of the % character) to the event log. I bet you can use a parameter to work around that though. share|improve this answer answered Jan 31 '13 at 17:09 colbybhearn 13712 add a comment| up vote 0 down vote Edit1: I tested that and it is not true that eventID is 32bits.
