I have a build a program using Xcode 4 on Snow Leopard. Architecture of the project is set to "Standard (32/64-bit intel)" Afterwards I have exported the executable file to a UNIX computer for running. ssh to that computer Typing ./programname in the terminal (Of the UNIX computer) gives the following response: Exec format error. It will also most likely be compiled against a specific set of libraries. Usually those parameters are exactly those of the computer doing the compilation (the other cases are called cross-compilation). In other words: compiling a program on a Mac will produce a binary that runs only on a Mac (unless, again, you're doing cross-compilation). Your UNIX system (which UNIX, by the way?) has a different operating system, different libraries and probably even a different CPU architetcture. Somewhat related: Apples advertised (or used to advertise) Mac OS X as a UNIX. While Mac OS X is certainly a UNIX-class operating system, that doesn't mean that it's binary compatible with every other UNIX-class OS out there. * almost always, with the exception of systems designed to avoid this (e.g. Java) share|improve this answer answered Oct 17 '11 at 11:50 Joachim Sauer 185k35395502 add a comment| up
ran exec format error wrong architecture csh test.exe on the command line, it gave me: cannot execute binary file Exec format error. Wrong Architecture. how should I fix this error? thanks sjang May 21, 2008 at 6:06pm UTC bnbertha (401) It's difficult to say without seeing the contents of test.cpp. However http://stackoverflow.com/questions/7793282/wrong-architecture-when-running-executable-from-xcode4-on-unix assuming your .cpp is C++ code, you're compiling with a C compiler, try using g++ instead of gcc. May 21, 2008 at 7:00pm UTC sjang (3) Hi test.cpp is a c++ program. I tried g++ -c -o test.exe test.cpp http://www.cplusplus.com/forum/unices/2041/ but still got the same error. Any ideas? thanks sjang May 21, 2008 at 8:17pm UTC Duoas (10453) The problem might be because you keep using the -c flag. You can't directly execute an .obj file, no matter what its extension. g++ test.cpp -o test If that doesn't fix it, then exactly what OS, hardware, and version of GCC are you using? May 21, 2008 at 8:31pm UTC sjang (3) Hi getting rid of that -c fixed it. Thanks for helps! sjang Topic archived. No new replies allowed. Wrong Architecture. Hi, I am new to bioinfromatics and bowtie so please excuse me if this is a simple question. I have bowtie on a linux server, navigate to my bowtie directory and try to execute the command "bowtie" and/or "./bowtie" . I get the following: .../.../.../bowtie-0.12.7/bowtie: Exec format error. Wrong Architecture. I don't know what this means exactly. Somebody had suggested to me that perhaps the program cannot be run on a linux machine, exec format error but the bowtie documentation indicates otherwise. Is there something obvious I am missing? Check where is came from, they may provide althernatives more suitable - otherwise you can compile it yourself. maubp View Public Profile Send a private message to maubp Visit maubp's homepage!
