It is more difficult to get things working properly, but once it's done you never have to think about it again. So, if you're willing to put forth a bit of effort for greater rewards than this tutorial will provide, please see the second link in my signature. Windows share browsing issues are somewhat complex in that even though your symptoms are exactly the same, the causes can be extremely different. In this howto, I will outline the five primary reasons for the problem, and provide fixes for each. Once you're finished, you should be able to browse and connect to Windows shares by clicking on "places" > "connect to server". That said, most problems are related to hostname resolution across the network. It's important to be aware that network name resolution can be a complex and daunting task to tackle and understand. The following outlines one way of potentially fixing this problem, but there are plenty of other techniques that work just as well or better depending on your network configuration. to stream videos over my home network. Everything is running fine, except for access to the Windows workgroup on my network. I am accessing this through the GUI, and I can get to my shared files about 15% of the time. Every other attempt gives an error: Could not display "smb://renchy-pc/shared folder/". Error: Invalid argument Please select another viewer and try again. for a folder I have already mounted, or: Unable to mount location Failed to mount Windows share for a folder https://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1169149&page=58 I'm trying to mount. The windows pc, running win7 x64, is sitting idle, with no screensaver or sleep settings turned on, and I have everything set up to share properly on the windows side ( I can access my files 100% of the time from other windows computers on the network). I really like the new found speed my computer has https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/samba/+question/164593 with this clean install of ubuntu, but if i can't fix this intermittent problem I'm going to have to go back to windows :-( Question information Language: English Edit question Status: Solved For: Ubuntu samba Edit question Assignee: No assignee Edit question Solved by: Jeruvy Solved: 2011-07-12 Last query: 2011-07-12 Last reply: 2011-07-12 Related bugs Link existing bug Related FAQ: None Link to a FAQ Jeruvy (jeruvy) said on 2011-07-12: #1 I wouldn't worry too much, samba works very well with Windows file sharing. Also affects distribution/package Nominate for series Bug Description Binary package hint: nautilus Using hardy beta, when I browse with nautilus other machines in an Active Directory (ADS) network, some of them do not show their shared folders. The ADS integration of the hardy box was done using winbind, kerberos and PAM libraries, essentially as described here: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ActiveDirectoryWinbindHowto The network contains mostly windows failed to retrieve clients, but also several linux boxes, which were joined to the ADS domain with the command: 'net ads join'. Machines running windows XP, windows 2003 and samba show '0 objects' in nautilus, but after inserting the complete path (eg.: smb://server/share) the folders can be accessed after the password prompt. Machines running windows 2000 show their folders regularly. Here is a detailed description of what happens: Case 1 --------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Browsing from hardy-beta a machine running ubuntu-gutsy server. In a terminal window: renbag@vm-hardy:~$ smbclient -L gutsy-server Password: (password inserted here) Domain=[LAB] OS=[Unix] Server=[Samba 3.0.26a] Sharename Type Comment --------- ---- ------- IPC$ IPC IPC Service (gutsy-server (Samba 3.0.26a, Ubuntu)) share Disk gutsy-server_share Domain=[LAB] OS=[Unix] Server=[Samba 3.0.26a] In Nautilus: Open Network --> Double-click on the 'LAB' icon (Domain) --> All machines are displayed; Double-click on the 'gutsy-server' icon --> after a while, Nautilus returns '0 objects', without asking for a password; Insert the full address (smb://gutsy-server/share) --> a password is requested and the share content is displayed. Case 2 --------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Browsing from hardy-beta a machine running Windows XP In a terminal window: renbag@vm-hardy:~$ smbclient -L XP-ACQ Password: (password inserted here) Domain=[LAB] OS=[Windows

I want to allow Win 2003 machines and Win 7 client VMs to access some file shares on the CentOS 6.2 server. Apart from some sort of gui sharing manager and the samba core is there anything else I will need to install to get this working. Thanks, Nick Top pschaff Retired Moderator Posts: 18276 Joined: 2006/12/13 20:15:34 Location: Tidewater, Virginia, North America Contact: Contact pschaff Website Samba setup on 6.2 Quote Postby pschaff » 2012/04/02 15:19:44 As far as I know the only option is samba-swat:Code: Select all# yum info samba-swat

Available Packages
Name : samba-swat
Arch : i686
Version : 3.5.10
Release : 114.el6
Size : 3.0 M
Repo : base
Summary : The Samba SMB server Web configuration program
URL : http://www.samba.org/
License : GPLv3+ and LGPLv3+
Description : The samba-swat package includes the new SWAT (Samba Web
: Administration Tool), for remotely managing Samba's smb.conf file
: using your favorite Web browser.
I have always found it preferable to just edit the config file. According to TUV's Migration Guide:[color=ff0000]system-config-samba[/color]The system-config-samba tool has been deprecated and removed without replacement. Users must set up SMB server configuration manually.
