I had done a few installs with 10.3 and been playing around with getting all the office apps replaced with Linux versions. I even figured out how to install Wine and get a couple of old apps that we need to run. But the same problem that I had with 10.3 installs is still there with version 11. During installation I

choose a Windows WorkGroups as my login type. I have an OpenSuse server running Samba which is configured as the PDC and Master DC. All workstations authenticate to that server and it works great! But for whatever reason, anytime I try "installing" with this type of configuration, the install never likes my domain name. There are a few windows machines with different workgroup names, but most all workstations are configured to login to the samba server under a single domain name. No matter what name I type in for the workgroup it errors with "Cannot use the Workgroup "xxxx" for linux authentication." If I back up and do a stand alone install and then later go in and change the login type to be windows domain it will work as it should. So there is something hinkey about how the install is looking for Windows Domains / WorkGroups, in that it's not recognizing the Samba Server WorkGroup. Am I misunderstanding or doing something wrong? Any help would be appreciated. If need be, I can provide my samba servers' config, but since there are many win2k, winXP, and opensuse workstations successfully authenticating to it already I doubt that I have something configured wrong on it. 22-Sep-2010,06:31 #2 thirdgearonline View Profile View Forum Posts View Blog Entries View Articles Newcomer Join Date Sep 2010 Location Beaumont, Tx Posts 5 Re: Cannot use the Workgroup xxxx for linux aut

I do with NIS http://linux.derkeiler.com/Mailing-Lists/SuSE/2011-11/msg00220.html at the moment. There are no users apart from root on the clients and /home on the server is mounted as /home on the clients by NFS. The kde login screen on the client displays all the users on the server. Using yast failed to windows domain membership on a client I cannot check the box 'Use SMB information for Linux Authentication'. I get the error: 'Cannot use the workgroup 'hh1' for Linux authentication.'. All linux users on the server have been given samba passwords and I failed to join have tried the server and client with firewall enabled and disabled. My question is: can samba do what NIS/NFS does at the moment? The answer is yes. Even if you've not asked this is done with Samba's winbindd which is configured via the YaST 'Windows Domain Membership' module.
