Search on GeoNet Submit to ArcGIS Ideas Error: Failed to connect to the specified server. Underlying DBMS error Error Message The following errors are returned when trying to make a Direct Connect connection to an ArcSDE geodatabase stored in SQL Server 2005. This error occurs from any ArcSDE client, such as ArcCatalog or ArcIMS Author. ArcCatalog displays the following error:"Failed to connect to the specified server.Underlying DBMS error[Microsoft OLE DB Provider for SQL Server: [DBNETLIB][ConnectionOpen(PreLoginHandshake()).]General network error. Check your network documentation. No extended error.]"ArcIMS Author shows the following error message in the 'Author Message Console', accessible from the Help menu:"java.io.IOException: DATABASE LEVEL ERROR OCCURRED."Application server connections to the same database work without any problem. Cause TCP/IP protocol might not be enabled on the system as a communication protocol between SQL Server Client and Server. To enable this protocol, use the 'SQL Server 2005 Surface Area Configuration' utility to change the setting.Application server connections to the database continue to function because clients connect to the ArcSDE application server, which then connects to the database. In this scenario, ArcSDE connections are local because the application server is on the same server as the database. Solution or Workaround Open the SQL Server 2005 Surface Area Configuration tool by navigating to Start > Programs > Microsoft SQL Server 2005 > Configuration Tools > SQL Server Surface Area Configuration.Select 'Surface Area Configuration for Services and Connections'.Click 'Remote Connections' on the left.Select the 'Local and remote connectio

I can't pin down any specific event causing the error, and my fix is to simply restart ArcGIS. Disconnecting and re-connecting the database connection without an ArcGIS failed to connect restart results in the same error message. Its a minor inconvenience, but one that would save myself and others daily grief if corrected. Double clicking or refreshing the connection won't solve the issue. Instead I need to fully close ArcMap and then re-open it. I don't think its a firewall or similar external issue, since the connections always remain active in QGIS or PGAdmin. –tshiffle Nov 12 '13 at 13:50 I have the same problem and the linked duplicate does not address this issue. did you ever find a way to resolve it? –user37124 Sep 17 '14 at 13:53 add a comment| 1 Answer 1 active oldest votes up vote 1 down vote Check the sde.dbtune and make sure TCPKEEPALIVE is set to FALSE. If it is set to true, a slight network problem can kick off the connection in 10 minutes. http://edndoc.esri.com/arcobjects/9.2/NET_Server_Doc/manager/geodatabase/administering_a-557706548/arcsde-1362237508.htm The article is for 9.2, however the TCPKEEPALIVE parameter is still present in 10.2.2 dbtune share|improve this answer answered Sep 23 '14 at 5:37 geogeek 33026 add a comment| Your Answer
