I'm not sure what I changed, but now in my InitInstance(), I get the above mentioned error message, in the line: Code: if (!ProcessShellCommand(cmdInfo)) return FALSE; And my program bombs out with the return FALSE; line. Does anyone know what could cause this error, and how to fix it? Thanks. I http://forums.codeguru.com/showthread.php?497872-InitInstance-gives-a-quot-Failed-to-create-empty-document-quot-message created a new MDI Application, with Tabbed Documents, Document/View Architecture Enabled, Project Style MFC Standard and all other default options in the MFC Application Wizard. The View of my Application derives from CFormView. I add a CRichEditCtrl in the View using the Resource Editor. When, I run this application, I get an error showing a message box "Failed To Create Empty Document". However, everything runs fine for all other controls. Insert AfxInitRichEdit or AfxInitRichEdit2 (if using Rich edit control ver. 2.0) call. Both are loading appropriate version of the for you RICHED20.DLL (ver2.0) or RICHED32.DLL. The best place to place this call is App's InitInstance. share|improve this answer answered Jun 19 '12 at 23:31 JohnCz 1,18756 add a comment| Did you find this question interesting? The problem is the SDI framework that relay on some initial things that are expected to run always. In this case it is always expected that the mainframe can be created. See code in CSingleDocTemplate::OpenDocumentFile Just place this code into InitInistance before LoadFrame or ProcessShellCommand is called. In this case you can easily terminate without disturbing problems. Another Idea is to allow the creation of the window, but simply using a PostMessage(WM_CLOSE); In this case the initialization is done, everything is created and the application terminates again. share|improve this answer answered Jan 8 '14 at 7:05 xMRi 7,2852922 sorry for the late, as your 1st suggestion the code is already present in my app file. and about PostMessage() I am not getting any Idea where to put this code. –A B Jan 13 '14 at 6:25 No. Your code is in the OnCreate handler.
